Search to Tab

Going into the “should have been in there by default” pile of extensions I have grown to enjoy since Firefox 2 came out, we have searchOnTab. This simple and small extension allows you to select that new searches always appear in a new tab via the browser.

It is a pain in the neck to have to open a new tab before I start a new search (if I do not want to have my current tab changed or surfed away from). I just have to believe though that there must be an easier way to do this. Has anybody else been able to find an about:config hack to get it done?

If not - then at least we have this extension to get the job done.

Easy, just opened up about:config and search for “search”.

You have to change browser.search.openintab from false to true.

Is there any way to have the search be in a new background tab if I press enter in the search bar? Some UserChrome.css tweak, perhaps?
