Addons in the Sidebar

Over at the Firefox Extension Guru’s Blog – the guru himself has posted a quick little hack that will help you place your addons and downloads into the Firefox sidebar. If you are not a big fan of the pop up windows they come to you in now, this might just be the solution you are looking for.

The best thing about this is you don’t need to download another extension to get it done. You just have to do some changing around in your bookmarks.

Mashup the Web

Do you enjoy mashing up your content from various sources to suit your own needs?

Well I have a tool for you that might make your mashing a little easier to handle. All you need to do is to find the virtual potatoes.

Operator lets you combine pieces of information on Web sites with applications in ways that are useful. For instance, Flickr + Google Maps, Upcoming.org + Google Calendar, Yahoo! Local + your address book, and many more possibilities and permutations.

All of these scenarios are possible due to Microformats, an emerging standard for injecting semantics into HTML.

Best News Reading Extensions

Has a week really passed us by since the last weekly top five? Well this week I figured I would help you stay on top of things with some really good news reading extensions. From the traditional RSS help to even a Digg tool from Netscape – we have a little ‘bit of everything.

Have another you love? Drop in a comment and let me know about it.

Good Search Plugins

I got an E-mail yesterday from a woman who wanted to know where she could find some good search engine plugins to put into Firefox.

She was a beginner and didn’t know which way to turn really. I pointed her towards the same place a point all my friends that want to know a little more about search engine plugins – Mozilla’s official Web site for them.

That is the best place to get started in my opinion. Have any other links that might be a good place for her to begin with customizing that search box in the upper-right hand corner of your browser?

Handy Xtra Stuff

Need a few more handy extras with your Firefox install? Well instead of finding a lot of tiny extensions to do your tasks, why not give the Handy Xtra Stuff extension a shot?

Adds some handy extra toolbar and other functionality to Firefox, including: Custom webpage source viewer button + configuration dialog, Toggle online/offline button, Tabbar customization UI, Copy ALT/TITLE text menu options, Popup ALT text option.

Firefox Power Button

The extEMM extension for Firefox is a power button for your browser. No, it will not give you super strength or flying abilities, I’m not talking about those powers. I mean – well, this is how the developer put it.

This extension adds a menu button to Firefox allowing the user to restart or close Firefox and re-open with the current tabs. The session is even saved through a reboot. This is a small extension that uses Firefox’s internal session save features, light and fast.

The button is small, but the functionality behind it is huge.

Tab Counter

You can place this one under the “kind of useless but might be of some help to somebody” category. The Tab Counter extension does exactly what you would think. It counts your tabs! After you install it, you get a little number on your toolbar to show exactly how many tabs you have open.

The toolbar’s default position is right before the location bar in the navbar, but you can move it to where ever you want by right clicking on the toolbar and choosing customize and then dragging it anywhere you want.

If you are afraid of having thirteen tabs open – because of the bad luck that might be involved, this extension might be the tool you are looking for.
