Google Calendar in Your Sidebar (again!)

I love my Google Calendar, but loading up the official web site each time I want to check it out is sometimes a burden.

Since I use it much more as a to-do list rather than actually setting up events and times I needed a quicker way to access. So I thought, why not figure out a way to open it in the sidebar in Firefox?

Google Calendar in Firefox Sidebar

Here are the steps to get it done:

  1. Create a new bookmark (right-click and select “Bookmark this link…”) for this address or drag it to your bookmarks toolbar:

    Mini Google Calendar

  2. Right-click on that bookmark and select “Properties”.

    Step 2
  3. Check the box that says, “Load this bookmark in sidebar” and you are good to go! I promise you this is a tip that is easy enough for anybody to use and setup.

Now you can access your Google Calendar and upcoming events on your agenda without pulling up a new web page.

Bonus: Check out my previous Google Calendar/Sidebar hack using the iPhone friendly version of Google Calendar. Also you can open Google Notebook to your sidebar too. Don’t forget about adding Google Talk to your sidebar!

Didn’t display like that for me. :( Long list of days, instead of a calendar.

Hi Ellie, it comes from the iGoogle gadget for it, so you might check there and make sure you don’t have it set to hide the calendar.

Also make sure your logged into Google Calendar/Google too. Hope that helps!

Works a treat here, even with my Google Apps calendar (which usually means all the clever tricks won’t work).

Thanks!

I tried it two more times, but it still displayed strangely - with the dates being listed one by one on separate lines; then my agenda at the bottom.

Now, I have tried it again (same browser, settings, etc.) and it looks just fine.

Go figure! :) Thanks, Mitch!

You can also use the Prism GCal.webapp from Mozilla to access your Gmail, GReeader, GDocs etc….

You can also build your own (bookmarklet):

Comment similat to Heinz’s: Can’t get the ‘proper’ date format, even though I made and saved changes on the iGoogle version: The changes won’t bleed through tot he sidebar version. Want it to show 31/12/05 not the US format.

To change the event list date format from US m/d to UK/AU d/m, change ‘up_dateFormat=0′ to ‘up_dateFormat=1′ in the URL string.

I.e.
http://www.google.com/calendar/gadget?up_showAgenda=false&upt_showAgenda=hidden&up_calendarFeeds=({})&upt_calendarFeeds=hidden&up_firstDay=0&upt_firstDay=enum&up_dateFormat=1&upt_dateFormat=enum&up_timeFormat=1:00pm&upt_timeFormat=enum&up_calendarFeedsImported=0&upt_calendarFeedsImported=hidden&up_showCalendar2=1&upt_showCalendar2=bool&lang=en&country=us&.lang=en&.country=us&synd=ig&mid=0&parent=&libs=9yKJTwdwCZw/lib/libcore.js,DXEULJSfpLM/lib/libdynamic-height.js,c64nWSZKWFg/lib/libsetprefs.js

I fought with this for a while, and then found a setting on my sidebar (All-in-One Sidebar extension, so may not be global) that said “Small screen rendering” That was causing the single line digits. So, that might help some folks.
