Google Calendar in Your Sidebar (again!)

Update – looks like this is no longer working. As an alternative, I would suggest using this: Google Calendar in Your Sidebar (iPhone Version)

I love my Google Calendar, but loading up the official web site each time I want to check it out is sometimes a burden.

Since I use it much more as a to-do list rather than actually setting up events and times I needed a quicker way to access. So I thought, why not figure out a way to open it in the sidebar in Firefox?

Google Calendar in Firefox Sidebar

Here are the steps to get it done:

  1. Create a new bookmark (right-click and select “Bookmark this link…”) for this address or drag it to your bookmarks toolbar:

    Mini Google Calendar

  2. Right-click on that bookmark and select “Properties”.

    Step 2
  3. Check the box that says, “Load this bookmark in sidebar” and you are good to go! I promise you this is a tip that is easy enough for anybody to use and setup.

Now you can access your Google Calendar and upcoming events on your agenda without pulling up a new web page.

Bonus: Check out my previous Google Calendar/Sidebar hack using the iPhone friendly version of Google Calendar. Also you can open Google Notebook to your sidebar too. Don’t forget about adding Google Talk to your sidebar!

Tweak Your Autocomplete in Firefox

Ever found yourself thinking that the autocomplete feature of Firefox could use some tweaking? If your wanting to dive deeper into the advanced settings of how it works I might have an extension for you to drop into your own Firefox install.

Autocomplete Manager Options

Autocomplete Manager offers the options you never thought you would ever need to have with the autocomplete feature of Firefox. After installing here are a few of the new perks you will get:

  • matching against bookmark addresses
  • matching against page titles and bookmark names
  • matching anywhere in the address, not just the beginning
  • completing the best match inline
  • temporarily or permanently disabling the suggestion popup
  • excluding local pages and pages containing search results

Want to grab a few more details? Go check out this thread about it over at the Mozillazine.org site for more information.

Now the good? This extension gives you tons of new ways to tweak your autocompleting ways. The bad side of things though, and it has to be said these days – some have said this is a big resource hog. So you might weigh the bad with the good and make the best selection for you.

Pirillo Talks Firefox 3

For long time readers, you’ll remember that Chris and Lockergnome were the main supporters of me starting this site and getting the word out about the Firefox Facts e-book. Where here are some of his thoughts on Firefox 3.

Still got much love for Chris, and he’s got some good and bad things to say.

Interesting video – maybe I should do a few video Firefox podcasts?

RSS Bootcamp with Sargeant Firefox

Listen here Private, I am going to not only give you some tools to get your RSS editing and reading done. I am going to give you the best tools you can load into that browser of yours. Are you ready? Well ten-hut – and sound off.

Different Ways to Read FeedsAlternative and Different RSS Readers

RSS Ticker – watch as your live bookmarks and scrolls their entries across your screen while you surf.

Simple RSS Reader – When you need to get the news fast, Simple RSS gets you there faster.
With only a few clicks you get your favorite news in your toolbar.

Feed Sidebar – The Feed Sidebar is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox Web browser that displays the new items from your Live Bookmarks in the sidebar. It works well – as long as you don’t have many feeds to get through.

InfoRSS – The extension installs a small icon (looks like an earth) in the status bar. The headlines are displayed in the beside this icon in the status bar or in a separate bar (top or bottom of the screen).

Editing RSS Tools and Addons

RSS Editor – Edit your own feed with this extension. It delivers a simple desktop RSS editor for casual editing of RSS 2.0 files.

RSS Validator – Once you open the RSS feed into the browser window, you can right click on the page or goto the Tools menu and validate the RSS feed.

Firefox Standard Feed ReadingTraditional RSS Reading in Firefox

Wizz RSS News Reader – At first I didn’t like Wizz much (fighting the urge to make a joke about “taking” this Wizz anywhere) but it has improved with time. It is fairly powerful, feature rich, well supported and has comprehensive online help for all.

Sage – The oldest and maybe the best of the built in Firefox feed reading clients. It delivers newspaper feed rendering customizable via style sheets. It also does a good job at integrating with with Firefox’s bookmark storage and live bookmarks.

Beatnik – Simple but elegant news reader for RSS and Atom feeds. It is simple. If your looking for neat features and a “wiz bang” interface, this isn’t the extension for you. If you need a feed reader for a dozen feeds or so and you want it built into your browser, you might want to give Beatnik a shot.

NewsFox – NewsFox is an RSS reader for folks who like Thunderbird’s built in RSS reader, but they don’t use that E-mail client.

RSS Reading on the Web (along with some cool tools)

Google Reader Notifier & Google Reader Watcher – Two grade A addons that give you a way to track when your Google Reader updates with new things to read. Pick which one does the best job for you and stick with it.

BlogRovr – It fetches posts from your favorite blogs about anything you’re browsing, and shows you summaries you can open read posts without leaving the web page you were on.

Extero – Clean, Yet Different Theme

Extero Theme for Firefox

The Extero theme for Firefox is something mixed between a stylish vibe and a familiar face.

TwisterMC is at it again with another off the wall – yet creatively inspiriting Firefox theme that I am sure more than a few of you will enjoy.

Here is how he describes the theme:

I tried to take a different avenue with extero and break away from the norm just a little bit. It’s not crazy different, but there are some oddities that make extero unique.

Overall yet another that deserves to be in anybody’s collection.

Quick and Easy Location Lookup

Having a hard time finding yourself around? Locator might be the Firefox extension you have been looking for. What makes it so special? Just simply select the address, right click with mouse, “Locate on Google Map” and your place will be located on the map.

Locator Firefox Extention

Highlight, Right Click and Hold On!

It all reminds me of that time I went on a cross country trip with a midget named Sam and $20 in my pocket. From the Golden Gate Bridge all the way to White House – we never knew exactly where we were or how to find the next place we wanted to go.

Now if we had this baby loaded up in Firefox – finding our way would have been a piece of cake.

Ok, well maybe there wasn’t a midget named Sam. Maybe it wasn’t even $20 I had in my pocket. That doesn’t change the fact that Locator makes navigation an easier task for all.
