Firefox 3 Isn’t Ready…Yet!

Reuters Messes Up So should you or should you not be using Firefox 3 yet?  I would say for 90% of the population or people using Firefox, no.  You should at least wait for the release candidate versions or the final version.  The fact of the mater is, even though Firefox 3 looks good it still is not done yet.  The idea of bringing this topic up started after reading a post over at Cybernet News:

There is a lot of talking going around the Internet about Firefox 3 Beta being ready for mass usage. It’s because of an article by Reuters where the creators of Firefox supposedly told them that the Firefox 3 Beta is ready for everyone to use after months of being in development.

So I thought I would do what I can to help spread the words too about Firefox 3 being nice, pretty but not ready for prime time just yet.  Just to give you an idea of how long you should wait – I haven’t even replaced Firefox 2 yet.  Personally I’ll wait till it goes into the "release candidate" versions so that I can get ahead of the curve with some of your questions about it.

Also major "shame shame" on Reuters for not doing their homework on this.

Thanks. But I keep the system tray hidden to make room on the screen.

Meybe they figure that people can just look at their System Tray/Notification Area and see the time, which by default is always shown.

For all the extensions that work with Firefox, why haven't they come up with a simple time reader placed right next to the word "help" on the toolbar? It would be nice for Firefox to let its users know what time it is without having to close the browser and look at MS's clock gadget.

My gmail still claims to be beta too.

I thought it was called "beta" for a reason?

I am not claiming that firefox 3 is ready for mass consumption, I am just saying that Reuters is reporting that it is.

    http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idUS...

"Until now Mozilla has discouraged the typical computer user from exploring these new features. But its developers said on Thursday that the situation has changed and that they will be revising their Web site."
  • The time that Firefox 3 will be ready for the mass public will be when it hits it's final release. For people who know the insides and outs of Firefox it might be ok, but with Joe Newbie he'll download it and wonder why he can only find a handful of extensions, or only a couple of themes that might work.

The Reuters story contradicts itself, it says it is ready for prime time and then says the Mozilla site says it isn't.

I guess I do not understand what Reuters did wrong. Is it not true what they reported? You seem to imply that they did not in fact talk to Mozilla about firefox's readiness. Do you have information that is contrary to their reporting, or are you speculating that firefox is not ready for mass usage? It seems that it is only your opinion that 90% of us should not be using 3 yet.
