Clear Junk When Firefox Closes

Clearing History Settings in Firefox Want to have Firefox just clear out the un-important stuff when you start browsing?  Now, this is highly based in my opinion – and I do have to say that one man’s un-important data might be another man’s stuff he can’t miss.

I’ll share with you though how I have my browser setup to clear some un-important data each time I close the browser.

Mitch’s Clear History When Firefox Closes Settings

Go to Tools, and then click on Options.

Next, go to the Privacy tab and select “Use custom settings for history” from the drop down menu.

Put a check mark in the box for, “Clear history when Firefox closes” and then click on the button labeled, Settings.

Make sure you add a check mark for only the following boxes:

  • Browsing History
  • Download History
  • Forms & Search History
  • Cache

Then hit the button labeled, “OK” to continue.  On the Options window, also click the button labeled, “OK” and you are all set.

This way I have Firefox setup to clear everything except for my saved passwords and login sessions that are enabled by cookies.  Your setup might be different, and if it is – feel free to share in the comments.

I think it did the trick! I'm still going back and forth between Safari and Firefox but these little things help make using Firefox much more enjoyable than the previous times I tried it out. Thanks again.

    Cornell,

    Thanks for the feedback.

I went into Firefox > Preferences > Privacy and it was already set to Firefox will "use custom settings for history" . I still don't have an option for Options when I click on Tools.

I went ahead and checked the last box "clear history when firefox closes" but left all the ones above checked. Not sure if this defeats checking the last box but I was alil confused.

Basically I want it like Private Browsing but not until I'm done browsing. Make sense? Private Browsing doesn't work for me because I use my history alot when I'm browsing but I hate not putting it on and having to remember to clear history when finished browsing so sometimes I live without having a history during browsing just so I don't forget to clear when done. Hopefully now it will all be smooth and I don't have to give up anything for something else.

About to test it out now.

Nina, for the Privacy Tab, what is the entry you have in the box following "Firefox will:"? The entry will need to be "Use custom settings for history". When I upgraded to Firefox 3.5, there was a different entry in the box and no options showed. After, I clicked on the menu for the above-mentioned box and changed the entry to "Use custom settings for history", the options appeared.

"Go to Tools, and then click on Options."

When I clock on Tools I do not get an option for "Options".

I'm new to FireFox (always used Safari). I stumbled on this site while searching how to do some basic stuff in Firefox. This is one of the things I'd like to do but don't know how.

    Any info I'd appreciate.
