2011 Will See Firefox 4, 5, 6, and 7

Firefox Development News

It appears Firefox will be taking great leaps in development by the end of 2011.  The official Firefox roadmap was recently updated and shows that Firefox 7 is planned to ship in 2011.  I find that a little odd, seeing how Firefox 4 is still being in development as we speak and recently updated to beta version 10.

Of course this is all just a simple drafted plan – so things are always subject to change.

Firefox 5

    • Account Manager
    • Simple Sharing UI
    • UI Animation
    • 64 Bit on Windows
    • …anything that improves responsiveness and is ready
    • …anything that improves stability and is ready
    • …anything that polishes the user interface and is ready
    • …anything else serving product priorities and is ready

    Firefox 6

    • Web Applications
    • FasterCache
    • OSX 10.7
    • JS Optimizations
    • …anything that improves responsiveness and is ready
    • …anything that improves stability and is ready
    • …anything that polishes the user interface and is ready
    • …anything else serving product priorities and is ready

    Firefox 7

    • e10s? deXBLification?
    • …anything that improves responsiveness and is ready
    • …anything that improves stability and is ready
    • …anything that polishes the user interface and is ready
    • …anything else serving product priorities and is ready

You can go check out the full roadmap and plans on the Mozilla wiki.  I am excited to see that Mozilla still has big plans for the Firefox browser, however I think it will be really hard to ship Firefox 4, 5, 6, and 7 all within 2011.

If Mozilla really wants to emulate Google Chrome so much–for example, its versioning and release cycle–then all it really has to do is start installing its plugins into every other browser on a user’s system. Maybe they should just change the name again… to Mozilla Copycat. They’re becoming a cautionary tale if you ask me. (Eliminating the status bar? I can already hide it [good grief].)

I think I’ll be sticking with Fx 3.6 till 2012 (when the world ends anyway, so… meh).

I completely agree with what Glenn said. Mozilla is continuing to just play catch up with the likes of Google Chrome and Opera. They’ve fallen far, far behind on browser development, and it’s a shame that they feel they have to copy other browser’s interfaces and development cycles, when they were once innovating it all.

I only continue to use Firefox for the plethora of add-ons and how customisable it is. But that soon could be changing…

True, The Two People Who Have commented above are correct, Firefox is Seemingly copying the likes of Google Chrome and Opera, Especially with the tabs. Now that new Browsers are coming out Firefox Has Some Competition if they continue to fall behind.
