Since then though, I have tried to cut back on the fluff and stick to a strict number of topics and posts a week. What I would like to know from you is what would you like to see more of? Every so often I see a comment or e-mail saying they are not happy with the level of content, so please use today’s post as a chance to give me such feedback so I can continue to keep you all happy with the content I put out here personally for all of you.

Feel free to send your feedback in as a comment on this post via FirefoxFacts.com or hit me up on Twitter or our Facebook Fan Page. Thank you all for the years of support, it is greatly appreciated!

Hello, sorry it has been a while since you last saw an update to this website – but that will all soon change. However, I do have a little ‘bit of news that I think you should all know. I am in the process of dropping FeedBurner as my RSS feed syndication method of choice, so if you are subscribed to:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/firefoxfacts

I highly suggest you change over to:

http://www.firefoxfacts.com/feed/

Why the change? Well, Google has not really done anything since they bought out FeedBurner and with that said, I fear that the service is close to being done away with. So please, re-subscribe to the new feed if that is the way you keep up to date with my posts here. For those of you who get e-mail updates, leave a comment – and if there is a big enough surge of people, I’ll find an e-mail syndication alternative that you can re-subscribe to. Thank you for your love, support and more and I hope you keep enjoying Firefox Facts!

According to the data, it seem that Chrome usage is actually on a little ‘bit of a decline while Firefox’s numbers are coming back up. Here is a little more about the facts and figures from PC World:

Whereas in January Chrome accounted for 18.94 percent, that figure fell slightly to 18.90 percent in February, the latest data shows. As for Firefox, it inched forward from 20.88 percent to 20.92 percent over the same time period.

Chrome’s January figure also showed a decline from December, when it was at 19.11 percent.

Internet Explorer, meanwhile–which is still the leader–fell from 52.96 percent to 52.84 percent between January and February, Net Applications says.

So, will Firefox be able to hold on to the market share it has or not? Let me know your thoughts! You can also take the poll on our Facebook Fan Page too!

If so, you had better upgrade your operating system. Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler announced that the Firefox team is moving towards using a newer version of the Visual Studio toolchain. Once this is done, Mozilla will no longer be able to build for Windows 2000, or Windows XP SP1.

The share of users still using these two out of date Windows versions is really small, the largest number I saw was maybe .4%? So, if this means that the Mozilla team is able to put out a bigger and better browser, then so be it. Dotzler says, “Next Tuesday or Wednesday, after Firefox 12 moves to Aurora, the Mozilla Release Engineering team will begin upgrading our Windows build systems to Visual Studio 2010.”

In fact, Mozilla has supported Windows XP SP1 and Windows 2000 longer than Microsoft has. Internet Explorer 8 requires XP with SP2 or higher, and has no support for Windows 2000 at all. So if you are still using Windows XP, make sure you are running the latest and greatest version if you want to still use Firefox.

I think it all started from the news reports from last week saying that Google Chrome had barely surpassed Firefox market share. The real issue at hand here is that Firefox isn’t dying – it is the fact that everybody else has finally started to wise up and put out a better browser.

I think Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and even Opera should all thank Mozilla and Firefox for continuing to push the bar for innovative browsing. It doesn’t matter who had what feature first. The thing that does matter is that with all the most recent browser innovations, like the search box or tabbed browsing – Firefox made it cool and useful to do so.

What Mozilla needs to do is find out what the next best feature is going to be. What can they do that the other browsers can’t?

One more important feature to Firefox’s success is the huge fan base that Mozilla has built. Don’t write Firefox out of the browser wars just yet. I have a feeling that Mozilla will see to it that they stay competitive out there. The browser competition is good for all of us because it means we will get better web browsing experiences – no mater which browser we use.

I guess the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

There is no doubt that both Microsoft and Firefox must be worried about Google’s Chrome browser. This odd team up only confirms there is a major worry that Google might get a little too powerful. It will be interesting to watch and see though how this effects Firefox’s default search in the future. You can only get the Bing powered Firefox on a specific website, and Google is still the default search engine on the version you get from the Mozilla website.

The current Google/Firefox contract runs out in November – so the guys behind Firefox could be using this special version of Firefox to test the waters and see how the public reaction is. If anything, you can always change your default search engine in Firefox so for knowledgeable users this might be a lot of fuss about nothing.

Mozilla is not out to make money or to have a stake in whatever gets developed there. All code that is written in the four week period must be open sourced. If you are able to really develop something cool and worth of investing money in, Mozilla may also add additional funding and resources to the project too.

Overall, Web FWD looks like Mozilla’s offer to the Internet to just make it better – plain and simple. They want innovative people with amazing ideas to step forward and work with them to bring their ideas to life. To learn more about the project, be sure to check out webfwd.org.

Firefox is bringing in a new test channel (to compliment nightly test builds, the beta version and the final release) called Aurora. The Aurora channel of updates will deliver features to users at various levels of quality and polish. This will be the new testing grounds as far as new features and innovations go too.

Overall, introducing this new update channel will both speed up development and give developers better access to get the things done they need to do. Here is a quick blurb about it from Firefox Release Manager Christian Legnitto:

Lastly, the new repositories (which map to the channels) allow developers to do what they do best—develop. No longer should a developer need to know we are in blocker-only mode for a particular release. Instead, they will be allowed to land their fixes on mozilla-central at any time provided they stick to the mozilla-central tree rules. The mozilla-aurora repository will have different rules, and mozilla-beta will have different (and stricter) rules still. The rules for each of these repositories will not change over time or from release to release, which should help alleviate a lot of developer confusion and annoyance

Going by the official Firefox 4 download stats, it appears in the first 24 hours Firefox 4 was available it was downloaded over 5,000,000 times. That is pretty impressive.
