Eliminate Your Search History

It looks like users of the Greasemonkey extension got one more reason to jump for joy. Thanks to this handy script, you can eliminate the ability for folks to track your searching habits.

So to alleviate that at least a little bit, I have written a little Greasemonkey extension that routes the searches you would normally make on Google, Yahoo!, or MSN through a secure search proxy over at http://www.blackboxsearch.com.

Just install Greasemonkey, install the script from here (http://www.nemik.net/blackboxsearch.user.js) and visit your Google, personalized googe.com/ig, Yahoo, or MSN page as normally. But whenever you do a search it will go through the anonymous proxy so that Google and others cannot keep track of your searches.

IE7 vs Firefox 2 – Security

So out of the two big browsers of the future, which one will handle security issues better?

Microsoft and Mozilla are on a collision course, both racing to complete major updates to their flagship web browsers scheduled for release this fall. Over the past two years, Firefox has zoomed from nowhere to gobble a significant chunk of market share at Internet Explorer’s expense. The biggest selling point for Firefox is its generally better record on security issues; so it’s no accident that Microsoft has paid significant attention to beefing up security features in Internet Explorer 7.

Spyware Poses as Firefox Extension

Well this is an interesting piece of news for the day. This is one of those things that you thought were bound to happen, but it doesn’t mean you have to be happy about it.

Virus writers have created a spyware package that poses as an extension to the Firefox web browser. FormSpy, which poses as the legitimate NumberedLinks 0.9 extension, is programmed to steal confidential information from compromised machines including passwords, credit card numbers, and ebanking login details. The malware is also capable of sniffing passwords from ICQ, FTP, and email traffic before sending this data to a hacker-controlled website.

Password Exporter

It is easy enough to export your bookmarks from Firefox, why not your passwords? That is the real pain in the rear when it comes to setting up a fresh install of Firefox. Nobody likes having to visit all your favorite Web sites just to click that little “remember my password” check box. Now with the Password Exporter extension, you can export and import your saved passwords and rejected sites between computers. Your passwords will be exported to an XML file and can be encrypted.

Temporary Inbox

For some time now, when I am not sure if a place is going to spam me to death, I’ll give them a dummy E-mail address that I don’t check that often. That way I can still sign up for a service, before I see if they are going to send me a plethora of E-mail I didn’t ask for. The Temporary Inbox Firefox extension takes some of the work out of the problem by generating random disposable email addresses. Use those email addresses for registration at forums, adult sites or whatever.
