Change or Disable Tab Overflow

It seems like with Firefox’s tab overflow features that were released in Firefox 2, people either love it, hate it or want to change it. Now I have had several E-mails sent to me looking for the best way to get at least two of those done of those done. (Not really sure if I could help you love it.) Luckily for you and me I have found a guide that will help you do just that.

Some folks, including myself do not like the tab overflow feature that was added to Firefox 2. For those of you who are not familiar with this feature when the width (in pixels) of the tabs becomes less than set amount (default is 100 pixels) Firefox will add scroll buttons to each end of the tab bar (see sample here). The purpose of this feature was so that all the tabs open will have a minimum width of 100 pixels. At 100 pixels the tabs are still relatively readable.

Tab Previews

I am secure enough in my own manhood to say that I like pretty things. When it comes to something I have to look at for many hours of my day, I want it to look nice as well. The Ctrl Tab Preview extension for Firefox makes scrolling through tabs a better looking experience.

Scrollbar For Your Tabs

I like the idea of having so many tabs open they start to stack up. While I am writing here, I always have multiple things going on at the same time. Now when it comes to switching between twenty or so tabs, you start to find using the default methods of navigating through them aggravating. If you find yourself in this type of pickle, then you need the Tab Overflow Scrollbar extension.

FaviconizeTab

Now I have been using just favicons on my bookmark toolbar for a while now. To face the facts, it does make my browsing a little faster and a little less cluttered. What if you could do the same thing with your tabs though? The FaviconizeTab extension takes away the text on your tabs and replaces it with just the favicon from the Website in question.

Now my only question would be, what do you do when you visit a lot of Web sites that are the same? What do you do when you visit Web sites that have no favicon? This is a neat idea, but for long term use – it might need some tweaking.

Firefox Tab Enhancements

One of the best extensions to give your tabs a little more juice has just been updated for Firefox 2. The Tab Mix Plus extension has been one of my favorites since the first day I laid eyes on it. It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more.

Tabs Menu

Ever wanted a drop-down menu of all your open tabs? The Tabs Menu Firefox extension does just that. This was not one of my must have features in Firefox, but now that I have tried it – it isn’t that bad at all.

The menu lists all the tabs contained in the current window so that it’s easier to see the full titles of tabs and switch between them when the tab’s title becomes too small to read or the tabs have disappeared off the right-hand side.

Firefox Showcase

Firefox Showcase is a Firefox add-on that enables you to navigate open tabs as thumbnail views of the actual Web site. It can run as a sidebar or in a special Showcase tab. You can configure it in various ways, view zoomed versions of the thumbnails on mouse over, close or activate a tab by clicking on the thumbnail, and quickly switch between Web pages.
