Get More Than 5 Bookmark Backups

Want to get a little more from Firefox when it comes to backing up your bookmarks? Not many people know that Firefox actually does save backups (one a day) of your bookmarks. They should be located in your “profile” folder. On Windows XP that would be here:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOURNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\UNIQUEID\bookmarkbackups

You can change it though to go a little higher. I wouldn’t recommend bumping it up too much more, but a jump from 5 to 10 shouldn’t hurt you.

Bookmark Backup

By default Firefox only saves five backups of your bookmarks. If you want to set this higher go into about:config (just type about:config in your address bar) and search for:

browser.bookmarks.max_backups

Now change the value from 5 to some other number. From that point on, Firefox should be saving more than just five backups.

Spell Check for All Text Areas

Spellchecking FixFirefox’s spell checker has saved my bacon a number of times. Before I had to search around for special tools and services to slap me on the wrist each time I misspelled mississipi..misissippi..Mississippi!

For some reason though, by default Firefox does not do spell checking in all text areas. You can fix that for youself like I did with a little about:config tweaking.

In your about:config (type about:config in the address bar to access) search for this string:

layout.spellcheckDefault

Change the value from 1 to 2 to get spell checking for all text fields and not just the big text area boxes.

Turn Off Session Restore Window

Want to know how to turn off that annoying “session restore” window that you get when Firefox tries to start back up from a crash? Ok, maybe annoying is a little harsh. A lot of people like the window, and a lot of people don’t like it. Who am I to judge?

If you find yourself in the camp with the annoyed folks, this is what you do:

1. type about:config in your browser URL
2. go to the browser.sessionstore.enabled setting
3. change the setting to false

One of the best features about Firefox is the about:config window. You can hack away and play with just about every aspect of the browser from there. Here is a guide I ran across that helps you use about:config to get rid of a few annoyances.

After installing Firefox, there are things I must do every time to make it behave sanely. Thank God for about:config. Strange how all of these things are disabling some feature of Firefox. Maybe Firefox tries to do too much.

Config Area of Firefox

Want to know a little more about some of the “hidden” parts of Firefox’s configuration? Well, over at JiggedyJoo (I just typing that) they have gone through just about all of them very quickly. This would be a good spot for a beginner to learn about such things as “about:config”.

Quite a few people know about the about:config page of Firefox, but there are more options than that under the hood of everyone’s favorite browser.

To peruse the contents of the cache, you can enter about:cache into the address bar, hit and look through. This has the advantages of being able to look at content stored locally, great if the connection breaks, or if the material on the site gets taken down / removed.

Stop Automatic Image Resizing

Alright, so it is not the biggest Firefox annoyance, I will give you that. Sometimes though I don’t want to have my photos resized to fit inside of the browser window. Call me crazy, but I think it distorts the picture in most cases and I still have to end up resizing it to full view to fully enjoy it. Well here is how you can get rid of that auto resizing “feature” in Firefox.

First thing you need to do is type in about:config inside of your address bar. Once you have made it there, you need to look for:

browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing

If you can’t find it, just enter that into your filter box and you should be good to go. Now here is where the magic happens! Double click that entry in about:config to set it to false. Now every time you see a picture on the Web you will be enjoying it in full view. No more resizing for you!

Remove Firefox 2 Go Button

There is nothing wrong with the Go button and there is nothing wrong with those who like it. Hey, if I had a reason to use it – I would. Thankfully though, I have an enter key, which in turn does pretty much the same thing. Banish the Go button from your installation of Firefox 2!

What do you need to do? Well just type “about:config” and scroll down till you see this:

browser.urlbar.hideGoButton

Then change it from false to true. That’s right, get Firefox your way with just a few clicks.
