Add Pinning Tabs Feature to Firefox

Pin Tabs in Firefox One of the cool Google Chrome browser features is the ability to pin tabs in the browser by default.

Pinned tabs are shifted to the left side of the tab bar where their tab will be changed to just show the favicon for the web site in question. Thanks to the Pin Tab add-on for Firefox, you can bring that functionality to your favorite browser.

Another neat feature of this Firefox add-on is when you type something in the address bar, or select a result in the address bar while a pinned tab is selected, the address you selected will open in a new tab – leaving your pinned tab alone.

How do you pin a tab?

You can also pin a tab by dragging it to the left of already pinned tabs.

Get more control over your tabbed browsing experience in Firefox with Tabberwocky. This add-on for the browser will give you dozens upon dozens of ways to customize the way you work with tabs. 

Some of the features of this Firefox extension include:

  • Open in new tabs from Bookmarks, History, URL Bar, and/or Search Bar
  • Open Selected Links in New Tabs
  • Retain tab history when opening links in new tabs
  • Show/Hide New Tab button and Close Tab buttons
  • Highlight unread tabs
  • Set minimum/maximum tab width
  • Close tabs by double-clicking on them
  • Tab clicking options

Plus many more.  It would take me four or five posts to go into all the control this Firefox add-on gives to your tabs. You can pick up Tabberwocky over at the Firefox Add-ons web site.  (kudos to Lifehacker)  It will give you more tabbed browsing controls than you can shake a… well, than you can shake a tab at.

Grab and Drag Scrolling

Do you like being able to virtually grab a page and scroll up or down it in your browser?  Now, some other programs have this ability (such as most PDF readers out there) however the web browser does not, until now.  The Grab and Drag add-on for Firefox will enable grab and drag scrolling, flick gestures, and momentum scrolling in Firefox.

This comes in really handy for tablet PCs, where your pen is taking the place of your mouse.  You can though use it with your mouse too, as it comes ready for 1, 2, or 3 button mouse support.

Grab and Drag gives Firefox a new way to browse, and also has plenty of options to tweak till you get it just the way you want it.  You can pick it up on the Firefox Add-ons site or MozDev.org.

Unique Browser Backtracking

Unique Firefox Navigation Tip Need to quickly navigate back in the browser history?  Now sure, you could click the actual backwards button, in the Firefox navigation toolbar.  I have another alternative for you to try though.  MileWideBack is an add-on for Firefox that will let you click on the left border of your Firefox window to go back to the previous web page you were viewing.

What does does this extension for Firefox allow you to do?  Well, if you can navigate forward if you right-click with your mouse on the Firefox border too. If you are using tabbed browsing, middle-click on the left border to close the current tab, or rotate the mouse-wheel to cycle through your current tabs.

One complaint I have heard time and time again is that Firefox doesn’t document the “how to” process very well, when it comes to building a Firefox add-on.  Well, thanks to the Add-on Developer Hub, I think that is one complaint I will not hear again.  The Mozilla team has put in a lot of hard work and effort into creating a place to centralize the help, tutorials and guidance you’ll need to build the next great Firefox extension.

Tracking Yourself with about:me

Ever wanted to know more about what you are doing while you are doing it?   You just did it, so why would you need to know what you did if you are the one who did it?  Exactly.  The add-on, about:me, makes sense once you see it in action.  It provides a fun way to see personalized patterns in browser usage.  You can spot trends in your browsing history and download activity. 

Here is a little more about the add-on from the developer:

The "Activity Stats" section graphs the websites you visit most, including the individual pages you visit most within each top-level site. This section also graphs your hourly browsing activity, which can reveal patterns in websites you visit most at various times of the day.

Appealing to some of the geekiest Firefox fans, the only way you can access the add-on in question is to type in about:me into the address bar.  It pays tribute to Firefox’s other hidden jewels such as about:config, and my favorite about:robots.

Cluster Tabs in Firefox

Since the release of collections of add-ons for Firefox, it seems like everywhere I turn I see somebody else offering ways to bring things together (although I am sure Opera would say they did it first).  With that in mind though, I would like to introduce you to Cluster Tabs.  This add-on for Firefox will let you easily cluster web pages together for easier sharing and saving.

Creating your own tab cluster is easy to do.  Once you have installed the extension for Firefox, all you need to do is:

  • Use the Cluster Tab button to create one from the current active tab
  • Click the "+" icon on any tab and select ‘create cluster from tab’
  • Alternatively simply drag one tab into another

Overall, very excited to see what all they do with this in the future.  It is a very interesting idea – and the human aspect of it is something I really think has a good chance of taking off. I won’t lie to you, I do a lot, if not all, of my shopping online via Amazon.com.  They provide a great service, what can I say?  For fans of the Amazon service I have an add-on for Firefox that will knock your online shopping socks off.  Amazon Hot! Stuff is the perfect fan for any Amazon shopping addict.

Once installed, you easily have access to your lists, your cart, and gift ideas all from one browser button.  You can also quickly browser through hot new releases, most gifted, most wished for and the movers and shakers on the Amazon web site.  Without fuss or confusion it does what it is suppose to do – give you easier browsing access to some of the most popular parts of the Amazon web site. 

If you consider yourself a die-hard Amazon fan, the Amazon Hot! Stuff extension for Firefox can not be missed.  Consider this your blue light special to get the month of June started off right.

Download an Entire Facebook Photo Album

Better known as the Facebook Photo Album Downloader, FacePAD will not only let you grab your own photo album, but will also let you download your friends’ photo album, event albums, and group albums with the click of a button.
