People often run into problems when Firefox updates, because some of their favorite add-ons no longer work. Well, it isn’t exactly that they will not work. It is the fact that the add-on developer hasn’t updated the add-on to meet the compatibility of the newer version of Firefox. In this article I’ll see what I can do to help you out when it comes to getting them re-enabled.

The first thing you will want to do is check for updates for your add-ons. You can easily do this in the latest version of Firefox by clicking the Firefox button and then click Add-ons. This will open up the Add-ons Manager. Next, select the gear button at the top and select, “Check for Updates”. Firefox will then search for and download any updates that are available automatically. Restart the browser when asked, and you should be good to go.

If the add-on has been simply disabled (Firefox sometimes does this with add-ons that were added by another program) you should be able to simply re-enable the add-on in question.

At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button and then click Add-ons. The Add-ons Manager tab will open.

In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.

Click the Enable button next to the add-on you’d like to re-enable.

Know of any more fixes? Be sure to leave them in the comments! Hope this helps you the next time you find your favorite add-ons are not working in Firefox.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

I recently upgraded from using the standard bookmarklet to save pages to the Firefox add-on and I have been really impressed with how it integrates into the browsing experience. Want to save something for later? Just click the icon for it in the address bar. You can then pull up your saved links by clicking another toolbar button that is added right into the Firefox interface. You can also sync your saved pages to multiple browsers and devices. So, I could save a link 5 minutes before I have to go to work – then read it after work on my iPad.

Here are some more of the fantastic features:

Save pages to a reading list to read when you have time.

Offline reading mode lets you read the items you’ve saved for later on the plane, train, or anywhere without an internet connection.

Sync your list to all of your computers, at work or home.

Sync your list to Read It Later apps for iPhone, iPod, iPad, Android and more.

After reading, bookmark pages on your preferred bookmarking service or share them with friends.

Click to Save Mode lets you quickly batch a reading list just by clicking on interesting links.

Text view strips away images, ads, and layout from articles and presents them in an easy to consume way.

You have to try out this fantastic bookmarking alternative to really see what all the buzz is about. You can pick up Read it Later from the Firefox Add-ons website.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

So, where should you turn to get the Mobile Add-ons for your favorite browser?

Head over to the special Firefox Mobile Add-ons website. Here, you can find a significantly smaller list of extensions that have been written with the Mobile version of Firefox in mind.

Some of your old Firefox favorites, like AdBlock Plus, NoScript and Speed Dial are available. Who knows, you might find a few new favorites too.

So, with that idea out there – let me know in the comments if you would like to see me do more mobile only add-on reviews in the future here on Firefox Facts. For the most part, this website has been pretty focused on the desktop only version of Firefox since the beginning – but if you’d like for me to branch out let me know and I will do my best.

You can check out the mobile friendly versions of the Firefox Add-ons on the Mobile Add-ons website.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!
If so – you might want to check out the new LikeJournal add-on for Firefox. This add-on (plus website service) will create a searchable database of all the links you like via the Facebook like button.

LikeJournal’s main job is to help you keep track of both your own Facebook likes and those of your friends’ too. It saves them all as social bookmarks, so yu can easily search and browse them in a single click.

The way this works is simple. You only need to log into LikeJournal website. After that, your likes from Facebook will be instantly pulled in and indexed so you can browse and search them through the extension or LikeJournal website. From then on – each new link you like will be added to your link list on LikeJournal.com. Even if you are without a like button on the website you are browsing, you can use the power of the LikeJournal add-on to share and archive any link, any time.

If you like (pun intended) both Firefox and Facebook, then you should give LikeJournal a shot. You can download this add-on from the Firefox Add-ons website.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!
The MouseControl add-on is a nifty tool that allows you to switch, close, quick return, duplicate and zoom just by clicking on your mouse buttons.

This fantastic little add-on for Firefox adds a lot to using the mouse and Firefox together. Here are just a few of the mouse combinations that it brings to your browsing habits.

While holding down the right mouse button:

Scroll up/down to move focus between tabs

While scrolled away left click to return to the original tab

Left click without scrolling or after scrolling and back to original tab to jump to last used tab

Middle/scroll button click to close tab

Middle/scroll button down and hold to undo last closed tab

Middle/scroll button double click will close all tabs with same host name (Ex: addons.mozilla.org is different from www.mozilla.org)

While double clicking:

Double click right button to open new tab

Double click right button AND hold to duplicate current tab

While holding down the left mouse button:

Scroll up/down to zoom in/out

Middle click to reset zoom

This might be the best power tool when it comes to getting more out of using your mouse with Firefox. You can pick up MouseControl from the Firefox add-ons website.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Internote makes adding sticky note reminders to Firefox a fairly easy process. Need to note something about a website? Create a Internote and the next time you visit that website, the sticky note will return. The add-on is also highly customizable and has tons of features. It might be the most feature rich sticky note add-on I have seen for the Firefox browser.

So what exactly does Internote bring to the table? With it you can move, resize, recolor, minimize, import, export, print or delete your saved notes and you can do this to one or all of your notes you have created at once. I would say the biggest feature would be the ability to minimize the notes to get them out of the way when you don’t need them and to bring them back when you are done looking at the content under the notes.

Another great thing about Internote is it is written with your security in mind. Here is a little more about that from the developer of the add-on:

Many such extensions claim to be secure but insert your notes into the webpage to display them. This means that if the webpage is looking, it can potentially capture your notes and transmit them off your computer. Internote displays your notes in a layer over the top of the webpage, so it’ll never know they’re there, and you’ll never know the difference. Ask the authors of other extensions whether their extension is secure or playing fast and loose with your privacy.

Instead of getting that sticky residue from Post-It notes messing up your screen, give Internote a try. Version 3 brings all kinds of new features such as minimized notes, the ability to specify the set of pages on which a note appears, an improved manager, better robustness and extendibility, and much more! You can download Internote from the Firefox Add-ons website.

In the year 2025, when we are looking back at what Google Chrome really brought to the web browsing world and we are all being chased around by robots, I think the one thing we will remember the most is the speed dial feature. Here is another add-on that gives you that ability named Sugestron Speed Dial.

Before the robot apocalypse gets here, let me first say that I really like Sugestron Speed Dial. Yes, it does what other speed dial add-ons do, but it does so in a very simple way. Some of the features included are:

Automatically filled based on your navigation

Open one of the websites using Ctrl + [number of slot position] shortcut.

Websites can be fixed to a position using the green pin button in the speed dial interface, or by clicking with your mouse right button when visiting a website and choosing "Add to speed dial…" to select a slot where it should be fixed.

Remove a website from speed dial by clicking the red button.

Also, the developer warns against using this and another add-on that effects the new tab page because if you do, his add-on will no longer work.

Sugestron Speed Dial gives you access to the 8 websites you have visited the most, it is really lightweight and deserves your time and attention. You can pick it up over at the Firefox Add-ons website.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

StretchClock is a highly customizable stretch reminder that will plug right into Firefox for easy mobility. No matter if you work from a desk or on the go via your laptop – you will always have the ability to keep this great extension handy.

Here is a little more about the add-on from the developers:

The neck, back, shoulder, wrist, and hip exercises have been gleaned from books and from my personal conversations with physical therapists. These stretches are specifically targeted to prevent the problems that computer users most commonly develop. Take some time and invest it in one of your most valuable tools. Your body. Using StretchClock takes 1 to 2 minutes each hour. That’s like a 15 minute break over the whole day. Aren’t you more important than what you’re working on?

Let’s face the facts. Anyone who uses a computer for more than one hour needs a quick break to avoid risk of carpal tunnel injury and Repetitive Stress Injury. This add-on is a great tool to help you take care of yourself. You can pick up the StretchClock on the Firefox Add-ons website.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Some websites, like Hulu for example, give you the ability to dim everything in the background on a page so that you can focus on the video you are watching. What if you could do that on every website? That is what the add-on for Firefox, Turn Off the Lights, brings to the browser.

This brings distraction free video watching to Firefox, plain and simple. Here are a few more features of Turn Off the Lights:

Turn the lights back on, by clicking on it

Fade in and out effect just like the Chrome, Safari and Opera extension

Support multiple video sites: YouTube, HTML5 video

Support multiple image sites: Google Images Search

More features are planned for the future too. They are looking to add autoplay, color changing, context menu options and more. You can learn more about the Turn Off the Lights project from their Google Code project website and pick up the add-on for Firefox from the Firefox Add-ons website.
