If you use WordPress to run your website, you probably jump in and out of the administrator side of the blogging tool a lot. I know I do. So, with that said, finding a tool that makes jumping into the admin menus of WordPress is a real time saver for me. That is where the WordPress Admin Toolbar comes into our picture today. With a single click you can go to anywhere within your WordPress administration interface and not even break a sweat.

Once you click the bookmarklet in your Bookmarks toolbar you will see several icons come up in the upper-right hand side of your webpage. That will take you to all the areas within your WordPress administrator interface. If you hover over any of the icons – then you can navigate down to the sub-menus and settings too.

You can get this browser add-on in a number of different forms too. Not only do they have a bookmarklet version, but there is also a Firefox add-on version in the wild as well as a Greasemonkey script too. So that is three great ways you can get your hands on the excellent WordPress time saver.

WordPress Admin Toolbar Bookmarklet

WordPress Admin Toolbar Add-on for Firefox

WordPress Admin Toolbar Greasemonkey Script

No matter which version you decide to go with (all are pretty great) you will quickly learn how neat this little tool is. It has saved me time in the past and I hope it helps you get things done quicker on your own WordPress powered websites too.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Needing an extension-less fix for converting long links into short ones? Now, we all know there are dozens of Firefox add-ons that could do this for you, but do you really need another extension to your browser? Maybe not.

I got an e-mail from a Firefox Facts reader who asked…

"What way do you suggest is best for link shortening? I don’t want to install another add-on if possible. Thanks!"

I’ll share with you the way I handle all my link shortening needs.

I would suggest you go sign up for bit.ly. They are one of the best link shortening services out there today. They have been around a while, so you know they are not going away (and breaking all your short links) anytime soon. They also give you tons of statistics for all the links you shorten too.

The bookmarklet is the best part about the service. As you can see in my screenshot above, it opens up a pane on top of the page you are looking at with the text all ready to copy, paste and share. You can even use it to tweet your short link via Twitter too – if needed.

To grab the bookmarklet, all you need to do is register for bit.ly, and then drag the bookmarklet to your links toolbar in Firefox.

So there is your quick and easy extension-less fix for an everyday browsing problem. While I still fully love all the Firefox add-ons and extensions out there, sometimes there is a better or easier way to do things without installing one more addition to the browser.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

One of my favorite tools to use to check for grammar problems in my writing is called After the Deadline. Put out there by the same people who brought you WordPress, this plugin for WordPress is the top notch tool when it comes to style, grammar and spell checking. What if you want to use it other places though? That is where the After the Deadline Spell and Grammar Check bookmarklet comes into play.

How do you use it? That much is simple:

Click the "Add Proofreader" link on your link bar to add a Proofread button above each text box.

Click to find spelling mistakes, misused words, and grammar errors

Click to continue editing.

Right now the bookmarklet does have a few limitations, such as it is limited to 7,000 characters worth of text, and it only works in text area form elements, however this is a great way to bring a great tool with you, no matter what web site you are on.

You can pick up the After the Deadline bookmarklet on AftertheDeadline.com.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Did you know that Firefox comes in handy when it comes to proof reading pages? Using a simple bookmarklet, you can easily enable Firefox’s built in spell checker on any web site.

The first step to take would be to bookmark this link (or drag and drop it onto your bookmarks toolbar).

+ spell check

When the bookmarklet is clicked, Firefox will turn on the built in spellchecker and highlight any misspelled words that are on the page you are currently browsing. You can check for suggested changes too, of course they will not be saved to the page though. This quick bookmarklet does come in might handy though for anybody who spends their time proof reading any online content.

Just drag and drop this link to your bookmarks toolbar:

Really Simple Notepad

Now when you need it, hit the bookmarklet link and up will come a popup window where you can type. The fun doesn’t stop there though. If you want to save what you have put in, just hit Ctrl+S to bring up the “Save As” menu. Make sure you set it to save as a text file and you have a simple backup of what you just wrote.

Thanks goes out to 7 is 7 for providing this hidden browser treasure.

Like the idea of the Google Notebook add-on but you don’t want to be bothered with installing yet another extension? Google has released a useful bookmarklet for people using browsers who can’t take advantage of the browser extension.

The secret here is that this bookmarklet also works for handy dandy Firefox.

All you have to do is visit the Google Notebook Bookmarklet web site, and drag the “Note This” to your bookmark toolbar. Your done! Now clicking that link will bring up a pop-up window asking you to “Please confirm that you want to add a note from this page.”. Hit “yes” to do so, or “cancel” to go right to your notes.

Here is Google’s official help video on adding it to another browser, the dance is just about the same in Firefox too.

Like this tip? Then don’t forget you can also add Google Notebook to your sidebar too for more Google note taking fun.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

I love StumbleUpon as much as the next guy, but the toolbar they provide is quickly becoming cluttered with stuff I don’t really care about viewing. I can understand why they want to get more social and interactive – but the main attraction was to browse through web sites other had marked as interesting.

Since nobody has made a StumbleUpon “light” edition toolbar I was out to seek a way to do much of the functionality I like but maybe via javascript or a bookmarklet. That is when I happened to run across a page that promised to be the toolbarless StumbleUpon.

Here is the bookmarklet you’ll need to give a thumbs up to something and review. Just drag and drop this link onto your Firefox bookmarks bar.

Stumble This!

Apparently I’m not alone. Found this on a few other web sites as well – and makes me wish that StumbleUpon would maybe create a lighter version of the toolbar. Maybe even roll out a secondary extension that just gives me a stumble button to push. Till then though this bookmarklet should do the trick.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!
