Firefox 3: Use the XP Theme on Vista or Vise Versa

vista-xp-firefox-3 Want to use Firefox 3’s Vista theme on Windows XP or use Windows XP’s theme for Firefox 3 on Vista?

Now you have the choice to switch between these without having to change your computer’s operating system.  Two new theme solutions for either XP or Vista have surfaced (they are experimental right now) on Firefox’s add-ons site.

Download the Firefox 3 themes here:

So if you use XP but you like Vista’s theme more - use it.  If you use Vista and like XP’s theme more, you have a more colorful default theme solution.

Set a Record on Download Day 2008

Download Day 2008Want to help Firefox set a world record? Sure you do! Mozilla and company want to set a world record for the number of browser downloads within 24 hours.

The New York Times ad…Firefox Flicks…the Firefox crop circle…Operation Firefox…you name it! The Firefox community is always up to some cool, collaborative way to declare their passion for Firefox. What better way to do this than band together to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours?!

Now how can you help?  Right now you can go to the pledge map and let them know you plan on downloading the final version of Firefox 3 when it comes out.  They also have many other ways to get active such as setting up a Mozilla party, follow them on Twitter, get a badge for your site and more.

Download MP3s from MuxTape

Download from Muxtape.com! I figured this hack was in the works for some time now, just happened to run across it this morning.  Thanks to Firefox, Greasemonkey and a little creativity from a scripter out there you can download music from the MuxTape web site.  Here are the words of wisdom from the script creator…

This downloads muxtape songs. Just click the “Download me!” link, change the file-name to your liking and append .mp3 to it.

There you go!  Pick up the Greasemonkey script in question here:

Now of course I am not encouraging you to go out there and be a pirate, but for those tunes up there that you can not find anywhere else or may be original works from an independent artist you would like to enjoy - the option to download is now there.  I have a feeling though they will more than likely get this fixed soon on the MuxTape side of things.

Video Downloads Without the 3rd Party

Video DownloaderI have had a few people ask me how to download flash or embedded movies without having to use extensions that push you through a third party.

There are a lot of extensions out there that will open up a pop up window, and if they support the site you want to download from there should be no mess. People want to cut out the middle man though and go right to downloading what they want. For those people I have a solution.

Although it might be a little more on the geekier side than some might like the UnPlug extension is what you are looking for. It goes right to the source, digging through the web site code and turns up what will most likely be the file you want to download.

Unlike the extensions people have problems with, UnPlug scans the page, and if it doesn’t know there the data comes from it can guess. I would say nine times out of ten it guesses the correct one too.

Firefox and BitTorrent

BitTorrent Loves Firefox?

Since the beginning of AllPeers, there have been many different collections of plugins offering BitTorrent functionality to Firefox and its other Gecko-based variants of Flock, K-Meleon and Wyzo, a Mozilla Firefox-based browser that fully integrates BitTorrent functionality into its core along with Firefox 2.0 code.

There have also been numerous plugins as well:

AllPeers (http://www.allpeers.com)
FireTorrent (http://www.wyzo.com)
FoxTorrent (http://www.foxtorrent.com)
BitFox (currently in development)
Firestorm (http://firestorm.mozdev.org).

FireStorm and BitFox, are both currently in active development. Wyzo is in alpha stage of development and have an alpha release (not for deployment in a production environment). FoxTorrent has been reviewed a few times before and installs a background DAEMON process to handle the transfers.

Wyzo/FireTorrent are both in alpha release although the Firefox extension is still available to download for testing purposes. From the list, it is plain for all to see that there is no shortage of BitTorrent extensions for Firefox at all.

However, the nature of Mozilla’s open-source platform and of the BitTorrent protocol mean that this list is by no means exhaustive and other projects are sure to take advantage to Firefox’s modular nature.
