Fix for Firefox Memory Problems?

firefoxlogo.jpg Firefox uses a lot of RAM. It is the number one complaint about this otherwise awesome web browser. So what can you do to solve this issue? Well there are a few rumored fixed out there in the wild.

Here is the nitty-gritty about:config solution to the problem:

  • Open up about:config by typing it into your Firefox address bar.
  • Right-click, go to new and then integer and name it this: browser.cache.memory.capacity
  • For the integer value, enter in 15000 if you have 512MB to 1GB of RAM. For those with less (between 128MB to 512MB), try a value of 5000.  You’re done!

Then all you should need to restart Firefox for it to take effect.

Tweak Your Autocomplete in Firefox

Ever found yourself thinking that the autocomplete feature of Firefox could use some tweaking? If your wanting to dive deeper into the advanced settings of how it works I might have an extension for you to drop into your own Firefox install.

Autocomplete Manager Options

Autocomplete Manager offers the options you never thought you would ever need to have with the autocomplete feature of Firefox. After installing here are a few of the new perks you will get:

  • matching against bookmark addresses
  • matching against page titles and bookmark names
  • matching anywhere in the address, not just the beginning
  • completing the best match inline
  • temporarily or permanently disabling the suggestion popup
  • excluding local pages and pages containing search results

Want to grab a few more details? Go check out this thread about it over at the Mozillazine.org site for more information.

Now the good? This extension gives you tons of new ways to tweak your autocompleting ways. The bad side of things though, and it has to be said these days – some have said this is a big resource hog. So you might weigh the bad with the good and make the best selection for you.

3 Addons for Web Dev Heads

Web Dev Tools for FirefoxWhen web development and design is mentioned, everybody’s top Firefox extension is the Web Developer toolbar. There are a few other choices out there for design and coding tools that you might have not of seen before.

View Source Chart – This extension does one job and does it well. It draws colored boxes around different source codes to help you read the information better. Instead of black and white confusing stuff – it’s all colored man. Look at all the pretty colors. Far out!

FireShot – This screen grabbing extension does the basics. It takes pictures of the web page your looking at. Unlike other extensions that do this job, this plugin provides a set of editing and annotation tools, which let users quickly modify captures and insert text and graphical annotations.

Palette Grabber – This one is really new (at least to me). It creates a color palette for Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, Flash, or OS X based on the current page.

What alternative web development extensions are in your toolkit?

Fancy Numbered Tabs

Numbered Tabs in FirefoxNow here is a new tab extension that got overlooked the other day with our roundup of the best of the best tab tweaks. Fancy Numbered Tabs lets you replace the red X that you see on your tabs (for closing) with numbers.

Now, why numbers? Well – and old keyboard shortcut guru once told me many moons ago that if you hit the Ctrl key plus one of the numbers on your keyboard you can quickly surf between the tabs you might have open.

If you like the shortcut, but hate remembering how to execute it the Fancy Numbered Tabs extension is an addon that can’t be missed.

This puts a prettier interface on that same idea so that you don’t have to sit and count up the tabs before you use the shortcut. I mean – come on, if you have to count up the tabs, then try to think of the keyboard shortcut then do it your not really saving time.

Access Every Instant Messanger in Firefox with Meebo

Meebo Firefox Chat ToolIt looks like Meebo’s Firefox extension has gained a lot of popularity and praise since its debut. Mashable is even reporting that “Meebo has already gained 12,000 users in under a week”. If you are familiar with Meebo – the Firefox extension should seem very similar in nature.

Get a sidebar with all of your buddies visible while you’re browsing. Get visual notifications when your friends IM you. Drag and drop links and images from web pages right onto your friends!

Your buddies live in your sidebar and you can login to AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, GTalk, ICQ, and Jabber! The neatest feature I would have to say is the visual notifications letting you know when you get a new message. So does this turn Firefox into an IM client as well as a browser?

Firefox Images Helpers and Tweaks

Firefox Image ToolbeltWith Firefox and a few handy extensions, you can take any gallery of photos or images and get more out of them. Where other browser might fall a little short, Firefox knows how to treat the image loving freaks out there. Need some help with your digital images? Firefox has you covered.

Image Toolbar – get that old IE6 hover-over toolbar on Firefox. You know the one that used to let you save, coy, print and more? Yeah I try to block using Internet Explorer out of my mind too.

Image Zoom – Allows you to zoom in on images to get a closer look. Of course, you still face the eventual pixelation of the image, but nice to have if you don’t want to export the image to an image editor.

PicLens – This is my favorite of the “view your images in a new way” extensions. PicLens instantly transforms your browser into an full-screen slideshow experience. It also comes with support for Flickr, Facebook and Google Images right out of the box.

Open Image In New Tab – I bet you can’t figure out what this extension does. If you said “washes the car” you would be wrong my friend. Get a new right-click menu option to open your images in a new tab. Yes, it really is that simple.

Have any other image extensions that deserve my attention?

DejaClick – Manage Repetitive Tasks

Record Your BrowserDoing the same thing over and over again sucks. Being repetitive sucks. If the Web is all about making my life better, why do I have to keep doing the same things over and over again? DejaClick, an extension for Firefox, looks to end my repetitive ways.

Here is a little more about the extension from the developers:

DejaClick is a web recorder and Super Bookmark utility designed exclusively for Firefox. You can record and bookmark your browser activities, then with a single click, replay the entire sequence all over again.

Now where does this come in handy? Well think of the tasks on the Web that you must do where you have to click through several links to get to the spot you need. DejaClick can record your browser’s actions and replay them as many times as you need.

Some of the other features include:

  • One-button recording and bookmarking
  • Toolbar with full record/replay controls
  • Sidebar with replay results and property editing
  • Statusbar with record/replay status information
  • Action and Event keyword validation
  • Optional AlertSite Business Transaction Monitor integration

So if your wanting to cut down on your clicks and let the browser do some of the work for you – this is definitely a neat extension to at least try, to see if it will do the job for you… literally!

Keep That Tab Open – PermaTabs

I’ve touched on the PermaTabs extension before, but I think I failed at passing the message that this is a very excellent tool as far as getting the important things seen through the day.

PermaTabsFrom sun up to sun down, I keep Firefox open pretty much all the time – and I always have one or two web sites I want to keep open. PermaTabs does the best job at doing that for me – even if I have to restart Firefox from time to time. (yes, it does happen!)

If you haven’t picked up on it already this extension adds the ability to turn tabs of your choice into permanent tabs. PermaTabs can’t be closed accidentally (even when closing multiple tabs at once), and will stick around between sessions. No more lost link syndrome!

Want to save that link, but you need to restart the browser real quick? Just set it as a permanent tab for a few and when you come back it will still be there – waiting for you and your eventual return.
