Best 5 Add-ons for Facebook Fans

image

Since Facebook is the king of the hill when it comes to social networks, there have been a lot of add-ons dedicated to making it better.  Facebook is great, but is not without flaws.  Thankfully, these Firefox add-on developers have worked out some of the kinks and have masterminded some of the best add-ons for Firefox to date.

Here are my top five Facebook add-ons you can add to Firefox.

Add a Dislike Button to Facebook

Adding Dislike to Facebook You can “like” things on Facebook, so why can you not “dislike” things too? If you use Facebook, and you have Firefox – you can now add the feature some have really been wanting. You get the ability to dislike things that your friends have posted.  These two add-ons (pick the one you like most) will get the job done.

Facebook Dislike – This is an extension for all the pro-dislike Facebook groups out there.  After installing, you can dislike posts, and each time you do, the author of the extension keep track of it for everybody.  So this way, if somebody else installs the add-on, they too can see all the stories that have been disliked.

Facebook Dislike Button – Now why feature two add-ons that do the same job?  Well with this add-on, a comment will also be posted on your friend’s page on your behalf notifying them that you disliked the story using the dislike button.

While Facebook themselves mull over the idea of adding this to the user interface, you can add this functionality to your Facebook page here and now.

Just do me a favor and don’t dislike me!

How to Download Facebook Videos

Thanks to a popular Greasemonkey script turned Firefox add-on you can now rip videos from Facebook to watch whenever and where ever you want to. The simply named Facebook Video add-on for Firefox will help you get the job done.

Download Facebook Videos!

How Does It Work?

This extension adds the functionality to download, convert or embed videos posted on Facebook.  When you click the download video link, the video will open as a .mp4 file.  You can then select, “Save Page As” from the File option in your menu bar to choose where to save the file on your PC.

The convert video link will take the video to the Zamzar free file conversion web site, where you can convert the file to .flv, .wmv, .avi, or the audio formats .mp3, .flac, or .wav.

Start Downloading Facebook Videos! – You can pick up the Facebook Video add-on from the Firefox Add-ons web site.  So there you have it, now you can grab those Facebook videos you have been wanting to save to watch later.  (Kudos goes to ZeroPaid.com for finding this tip!)

Facebook Toolbar

Facebook Toolbar for Firefox

Facebook seems to quickly be outgrowing the other social networks by leaps and bounds.  It is hard to find a friend that hasn’t switched over to it from the other social networks like MySpace and the like.  So with that said, why not grab a toolbar that will help you get a little more out of your Facebook usage and help you stay connected with your friends even better?

Shareaholic – Share the Best of the Web via Firefox

I have looked at Shareaholic, the super-charged link sharing tool for Firefox, before in the past, however, there have been many new features and renovations since the last time I checked out this power house of a Firefox extension.

I thought it would be worth the effort to re-introduce you to this fine add-on for Firefox.

What is so Special About Shareaholic?

Easy Customization for How to Use Shareaholic The main idea behind Shareaholic, is to be the ultimate add-on for the link sharing addict.  It works with Facebook, Twiter, MySpace, digg, Gmail, StumbleUpon and more; giving you instant access to reach for all your link submitting and sharing needs.

One nice feature new to me, since the last time I checked out this add-on is the ability to customize how the add-on is displayed in Firefox.  You can have it show up in the URL bar, in your context menu, or as a button in the navigation panel.

By far, this is one of the best add-ons to get your hands on if you are a social network junkie, and need any easy way to submit to them all.  With that said though, you can easily customize which social sites are viewable (or not) in the options too.

Pick the Social Networks You Want/Need to Use

Any Firefox add-on that lets me customize how to use it, so that I can make it suit my own needs even more is a winner in my book.  De-clutter your browser and pick up Shareaholic up on the official web site, Shareaholic.com or via the Firefox Add-ons site.

Download an Entire Facebook Photo Album

Download Your Facebook Photo Album In need of a way to download all the images you may have uploaded to your Facebook photo album?  Sure you could go through each image, click by click and download each one individually.  Why do that though, when you have FacePAD.  This extension will let you grab all the photos from any album you need on Facebook.

Better known as the Facebook Photo Album Downloader, FacePAD will not only let you grab your own photo album, but will also let you download your friends’ photo album, event albums, and group albums with the click of a button.

Here is a video from the developers on how to use FacePAD:

You can learn more about the add-on and get more help on how to use it via the Firefox Add-ons site.  If you want to backup your Facebook photos or save a few that a friend has uploaded, the Facebook Photo Album Downloader will be a great timesaver for you.

Skin Facebook to Look More Stylish

Since the recent Facebook re-design, there are not many themes or skins out there that work with it.  However, I have found one that is fully compatible and (for some) a much more pleasant viewing experience, the Vista Ultimate Skin for Facebook.

facebook-vista-skin

Vista Ultimate Skin for Facebook – Want to make Facebook look a ‘bit more Vista-like?  This user style will give Facebook the look and feel of Windows Vista.

Also, if you want just the Vista-like taskbar inside of Facebook, you can pick up this user style.

Facebook Vista Taskbar

For these two user styles to work, you have to have the Stylish extension for Firefox installed.  Once you do,  be sure to check out our entire archive of Stylish tweaks and tips.  Also, if there are any Firefox Facts fans on Facebook, be sure to look me up and add me as a friend.  Have any favorite user styles you like to use with Facebook to tweak the interface?

Xoopit for Gmail

Need a personal assistant for your Gmail account?  It might not make you coffee, but Xoopit is the next best thing.  Xoopit for Gmail gives you the ability to get a lot more out of your e-mail inbox.  For example, you can quickly browse photos, files and videos.

Xoopit for Gmail

That is the only places where Xoopit for Gmail shines.  It also lets you:

  • Search your stuff, not your messages. Xoopit upgrades Gmail search to show you the photos, videos and files that match what you are looking for.
  • Browse photos and videos from YouTube, Flickr, Shutterfly, Kodak and Picasa. Links sent to your Gmail account are automatically collected, saving you the hassle of going to these sites.
  • Easily find and access your files in Gmail. Never misplace an attachment again.
  • Quick share to friends, Facebook or your blog.
  • Do a web search while composing a mail in Gmail and add results directly to your message.
  • Get information, contact details and more about the people in Gmail’s conversation view.

All this from your Gmail inbox.  In the long haul, this add-on will not only make your inbox more social, but will also make it more useful as well.  You can learn more about the service at xoopit.com or pick up the add-on directly on Firefox’s Add-on web site.

Social Network Updating with PingFire

Ping.fm makes it simple to update all of your social network pages in a snap.  The only thing that would make it even easier to use, is if there was a Firefox add-on based around it.  PingFire is that tool.

Ping.fm is a cool tool in its own right.  It allows you to updates twitter, jaiku, tumblr, pownce, facebook, myspace and more all in one single place.  This PingFire extension just adds onto that functionality – by allowing to to use PingFire from anywhere.

PingFire in Action

PingFire supports all of Ping.fm’s contents types, your custom triggers, as well as Ping.fm’s posting shortcuts. It also includes a “Quote” feature which post the selected text and the URL to Ping.fm.

You can pick up this handy status updating tool from the Firefox Add-ons web site.

What is Snowl?

What is Mozilla Snowl? Well, it is defined by Mozilla Labs as, “An Experiment with Messaging in the Browser”.  They launched this new side project yesterday, and I do have to say – like most things they do – Snowl looks very interesting.

Think of it as mixing the web browsing of Firefox with an instant messenger.  This way you always have your close connections at your fingertips while your out on the Web.  The future roadmap for Snowl looks to deliver:

  • support for additional message sources, e.g. Facebook, AIM, Google Talk, etc.;
  • an interface for writing and sending messages to enable true two-way conversations;
  • an API to make it easier for developers to build new experimental interfaces, e.g. an instant message view.

They have also released a couple of screenshots of the project as it looks now:

Are you excited yet, or is it still too early to tell?  Personally, it does look exciting and there is no doubt in my mind if anybody was to do it right, it would be Mozilla for sure.
