Picking a location for all of your downloaded files is an easy thing to do. All you have to do is go to Tools in the menu bar, then Options, then in the Main tab, pick your place to save your downloads. What if you want all your downloaded .zip files in a folder named “Archives” and files downloaded from Mozilla.org to go into a folder named, “Mozilla Downloads”? Then you need the Automatic Save Folder add-on for Firefox.

This extension allow you to specify where each file you are downloading will be saved too. If you are using the Firefox option “Save the files in this folder”, the file will be saved automatically to that location. If you are using the Firefox option “Always ask where to save the files”, Firefox will show you suggested path location choices to save your file to.

How to Start Sorting Your Downloads

Your downloads will play by the rules you set up for them. Here are a few example situations:

If you want all your executable files .exe to be saved in a specific folder:

domain: all

filter: .exe

folder: your executable files folder

Now if you want all the files from a particular website (mozilla.org for example) to be saved in a Mozilla folder:

domain: mozilla.org

filter: all

folder: your Mozilla folder

As you can see the possibilities for customizing your files and where they are downloaded to are endless. You can also use dynamic variables to create a dated folder:

folder: X:\root folder\%Y% %m% %d%

Another neat feature is the ability to automatically accept the download. There is no need to click the OK button.

You can learn more about how to customize and use the Automatic Save Folder extension for Firefox on the official web site, and download it from the Firefox Add-ons web site.

We are always talking about adding features to Firefox, what about for those people who would like to take them away? Better yet, how about adding features that let you take other features away? Ok, now I am even confusing myself.

Firefox has some great add-ons to use when it comes to blocking, filtering or checking out the sometimes shady information that may be passing through it.

LeechBlock – This extension is much more for saving you from looking at random stupid links when you should be working. If you can not keep yourself focused, you may need to add this to your own Firefox install.

Flashblock – Tired of seeing the offers to punch President Bush, the Pope or any other important person to win an iPod? The Flashblock add-on has your back as it will block all flash until it is told not to.

Adblock Plus – How could you not love Adblock Plus? Filter out the ads you don’t want to see – and automatically subscribe to filters so you don’t waste time setting these things up yourself. Not to mention, I did interview the creator of the script a few months back (very awesome guy!).

NoScript – NoScript allow JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from sites you trust. Some feel it is better to browse the Web this way to make sure you don’t get bit by something nasty by randomly surfing through pages.

CookieSafe – This extension will allow you to easily control cookie permissions. It will appear on your statusbar. Just click on the icon to allow, block, or temporarily allow the site to set cookies.

Know of another blocking or filtering tool that does a better job?

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

The No-NSFW add-on for Firefox will warn you whenever you are about to view a page that may not be suitable for all ages. It is a tiny addition to the browser that lives in your statusbar. You can vote too, when you reach an unrated page to determine if it is safe for work or not.

For more information, they do have a blog setup, and you can pickup the extension at nonsfw.com.

Poor ol’ Rick Astley has never been as popular as he has been in the past few weeks. Thanks to the new Internet prank of “rickrolling” millions of people have listening to his song. Probably more so than listened to it in 1987 if I had to guess. If you have your Firefox handy you too can get in on the fun.

RollTube is the first one the list, after installing this addon it will switch every video on YouTube with the infamous video of Rick shaking his funky white stuff. Here it is in action:

RollTube – the rick roll firefox extension from fffffat labs on Vimeo.

If all this Rick Astley love isn’t doing it for you, and your more annoyed than amused by it all then I have an addition to Firefox to help you out as well. Pick up the Rickroll Database. This is a filter you can setup your AdBlock Plus to subscribe to. You can also submit your own rickrolling videos to the database to make sure nobody else gets fooled by it again.

Just remember, here on Firefox Facts we’ll never give you up or let you down either… promise!

Add me on Twitter! Come follow my daily antics, links, tips and more @mitchkeeler on Twitter!

Personal content filter based on user-defined preferences such as keywords, filtering sensitivity settings and URL exceptions. Password protected (default password is “foxfilter”).

Yet another interesting way of filtering content for your Firefox browser. The one feature I really like is the blocking by keyword. That is really neat, and have not seen it in too many other downloads like this.
