Firefox 2.0 Delay

Over at TechWeb I found out about some updated news on Firefox 2.0′s release date:

Mozilla Corp. on Monday pushed back the release date of Firefox 2.0 yet again, with a scheduled ship for mid-to-late October. According to the minutes of Mozilla’s weekly progress meetings, there are approximately 40 bugs in the under-construction Firefox 2.0 Beta 2, and about 100 that need to be addressed before the final goes out the door.

Now this is not Microsoft. It isn’t like the Mozilla folks are delaying it by a few years. It just looks like it is getting pushed back a few weeks. If they can make my experience better in those few weeks, then I don’t mind the wait. In fact, my Birthday is on the 17th of October, so if they could get it released on that date, it would be one heck of a birthday present.

Swiftfox

Swiftfox is an optimized build of Mozilla Firefox. Swiftfox has builds for both AMD and Intel processors. The 1.5.0.5 release is based on Firefox 1.5.0.5. The trunk is the most cutting edge of all the builds and is where Firefox 3 is being developed. Branch builds are built from a code base that has been tested much more than the trunk and therefore should be considered to be more stable. The 1.8 branch is where Mozilla develops Firefox 2 which will be the next major Firefox release.

Firefox 2.0 Beta Fixes Tab Overflow

What the heck is tab overflow? I was confused as well:

By this point I think most people know the frustration that I had with how Mozilla handled the scrolling tab-bar in Firefox but it looks like they have found a good solution. By default I can now have a much more reasonable number of tabs open, in the area of 20-30, before the tabs start to scroll. Thank you Mozilla!

Is Firefox 2.0 a slam dunk? Well, the folks at eWeek don’t think so. I am still happy with how things look, and so are the folks at Lifehacker. Go check out Lifehacker for some more pictures of the guts and soul of the newest edition of browser in question. I think we are reaching the point where some folks in the media Online almost want Firefox to fail. I guess they think we can’t let our idols get too powerful.

Firefox’s 9 Month Outlook

I read a very interesting outlook on where Firefox is heading in the near future this morning. Now the regular user might not care too much, they just want it to work. It is neat to look ahead though for those of us who like to see what the future might hold.

I heard a few questions yesterday about the future of Firefox and its product goals, differentiating factors, and its positioning against Microsoft and its Internet Explorer browser. I’ve been following the Firefox process intermittently so I’ll outline some of what I know in an attempt to spark community involvement and feedback on behalf of Mozilla and the Firefox team.
