When and Where to Get Firefox 3

Download Day - English

So you woke up early, ran to your PC, wanted to download Firefox 3 and you see there is no buzz about it yet.  Did you mark the right day on your calendar?

Yes, today is Download Day for Firefox 3.

Right now we are just waiting for Mountain View, California, USA at 10:00:00 AM. Pacific Daylight Time (PDT) to happen.  At that time the switch will be flipped and Firefox 3 will be ready for the masses!

To help with the time conversions, check out this link.  For the US, it looks like the eastern time zone will get it at 1:00 PM.  The central time zone gets it at noon.  The mountain time zone gets it at 11:00 AM and the west coast will get it at 10:00 AM.

Now I just wonder how many times an hour the Firefox home page will be refreshed during the day looking for changes?

Keep sending in your comments and questions, will be helping you all through out the day!

Update: Watch the Mozilla team’s progress through all of today’s tasks and jobs:  http://wiki.mozilla.org/Releases/Firefox_3.0

Update #2: Once the time has come, most of us can pickup the download here:  http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/3.0/win32/en-US/ Downloading from here will not be counted towards the world record downloads. So please try to do it via getfirefox.com.

Update #3: Loads of fake Firefox 3 sites are popping up, especially on sites like Digg.com.  Please make sure you go to mozilla.org to download Firefox 3 and no where else.

Update #4: Less than an hour to go, and SpreadFirefox.com is having MySQL connection issues. All you Spread Firefox peeps feel free to join us here. :D

Update #5: It’s time! No wait – getfirefox.com is already dead.

Update #6: Here is the latest from Mozilla:

The outpouring of interest and enthusiasm around Firefox 3 has been overwhelming (literally!). Our servers are currently feeling the burn and should be back to normal shortly. Download day will officially commence once the site goes live. The 24 hours period will be clocked from that moment. Thanks for your continued support.

Update #7: Mozilla’s Firefox web site is coming back up with a new design!
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Update #8: Mozilla’s Firefox web site is now pointing to the Firefox 3 download link. Enjoy! (If you get “connection interrupted” try again… later.)

Update #9: Able to grab Firefox 3 yet? If so, then grab your own certificate as a special gift for helping out:

Update #10: Mozilla.com web traffic is pushing well over 2 Gigabits a second of just pure HTTP traffic. That is in addition to the 13 Gigabits a second or so of download traffic. We are still at around 14,000 download/minute and mozilla.com is responding well! Go Mozilla community and IT team!

Firefox 3, Worth the Wait? What About Firefox 4?

So as you anticipate getting your hands on Firefox 3 tomorrow, do you think it will be worth the wait?  Due to memory issues and problems with multiple tabs Firefox 2 has kinda been the picked on step child of the Firefox releases.  Personally Firefox 2 never caused me any big issues, but for others it is a different issue.

Also, what comes next after Firefox 3?  Here is what Mike Shroepfer, Mozilla VP of Technology has had to say on Firefox 3.1 and Firefox 4:

There were a number of features that we held back from Firefox 3 because  they weren’t quite ready – but they were nearly complete.    These include things like XHR, native JSON DOM bindings, ongoing performance tuning,  awesomebar++, better system integration, etc.  This along with the overall quality of Gecko 1.9 as a basis for mobile and the desire to get new platform features out to web developers sooner has lead to us want to do a second release of Firefox this year.   This release would be date-driven and targeted at the end of 2008.   Any features not ready in time will move to the next major release.  This is currently planned to be based on Gecko 1.9.1 – but if there are solid technical reasons for breaking frozen APIs we will bump the version number to Mozilla2.

Firefox 4 will incorporate some of the more aggressive platform improvements in Mozilla2.   It is far too early to set a shipping date  but an initial target would be sometime in late 2009.  Mozilla2 work has been underway for > 8 months

One thing is for sure, it is a good time to be a Firefox fanatic.

Search Through Your Saved Passwords

saved-passwords-firefoxThis is one of those “under the radar, but still cool” features of Firefox 3 I haven’t heard much praise about.

You can now search through your saved password information.  This is great for those of us who often forget what login we used with what web site and don’t want to go scroll happy going down the list to maybe find the right result.

To check it out, go to Tools, Options and then the Security Tab.  Then click on the “Saved Passwords…” button under the Passwords section.

The rest of it is pretty self explanatory.  Type the phrase your looking for in the search box, and the list will get shorter.

Silvermel is the Best Firefox 3 Theme Yet?

Silvermel might be the best looking design out there for Firefox 3 and it’s e-mailing counterpart, Thunderbird.

screenshot-ff screenshot-tb

Found out about this beauty of a theme via TwisterMC, and if anybody knows about a good looking theme, it is that guy.  Every inch of this theme is skinned from top to bottom with what I can only call “slickness”.  Silvermel seems to be a relation to Charamel – another great looking Firefox theme I hardly knew.

Pick up Silvermel for both Firefox and Thunderbird at silvermel.net.

Firefox 3 RC 2 Released

We are getting closer to a final release for Firefox 3 and that is the sort of thing that just makes me all happy inside.  Not much is really known about the Firefox 3 RC2 release as far as what has been improved.  In a general nutshell it is said they fixed some reliability and performance issues.  For me?  It is just as awesome as Firefox 3 RC1 was, so thank goodness for little things.

You can download the Firefox 3 – RC2 at the Mozilla web site if your feeling like you want to do a little testing.  If you have RC1 and you want to move to RC2, just go up to “Help” in the menu bar, then “Check for Updates”.

Check out the release notes for yourself and then download if your ready to take the leap.  Once again, must say this isn’t the final version just yet, so unless your just overly curious like some of us – might want to wait before downloading.

Set a Record on Download Day 2008

Download Day 2008Want to help Firefox set a world record? Sure you do! Mozilla and company want to set a world record for the number of browser downloads within 24 hours.

The New York Times ad…Firefox Flicks…the Firefox crop circle…Operation Firefox…you name it! The Firefox community is always up to some cool, collaborative way to declare their passion for Firefox. What better way to do this than band together to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours?!

Now how can you help?  Right now you can go to the pledge map and let them know you plan on downloading the final version of Firefox 3 when it comes out.  They also have many other ways to get active such as setting up a Mozilla party, follow them on Twitter, get a badge for your site and more.

Classic Compact Theme and Add-on

The tiny little theme we all know and love is now ready for Firefox 3.  Classic Compact might be my favorite out of all the “Mini Me” themes out there for Firefox.  Not only does it shrink the browser interface of Firefox but it also does so in a visually appealing way.

Not only do we get a theme to share though, we awesome have an add-on to help customize Classic Compact even more.  The rightfully named Classic Compact Options extension gives you a little more control over the specific theme itself.

Options include: FF2 buttons; keyhole arrows; turning off gradient backgrounds; modifying borders; OS scrollbars; dark system color support; merging menu bar into one menu button; etc.

So if your already growing tired of the default Firefox 3 theme, might give Classic Compact a shot.
