Firefox 3 – RC1 is in the Public!

Firefox 3 - RC1 is OUT!

After three years of development, Firefox 3 has finally almost made it to a version ready for the public.  So what does the release candidate (otherwise known as RC) mean?  This is pretty much the final version of Firefox 3 – short of bug fixes and little tweaks here and there. 

I think this quote from Asa Dotzler sums things up nicely…

With more than 15,000 improvements over the previous release, ranging from dramatic performance and memory gains to truly innovative features like the “Awesome Bar,” Firefox 3 is the no-compromise browser that puts you back in control of your Web experience.

Learn More About Firefox 3′s Site Identification Button

Taking a deeper look at the new site identification button inside of Firefox 3, dria.org does a good job at taking it apart and showing you what it is all about.  Honestly, it takes the padlock in browsers past and puts a whole new useful spin on it.   No longer is it just a yes or no answer on if a site is safe.  You get all kinds of useful information delivered right to you in a way you have yet to see in a next generation browser.

Making Your Smart Bookmarks Even Smarter

Over at CyberNet they have posted a great guide on how to create your own smart bookmarks. Smart bookmarks are the new feature to Firefox 3 that allow you to bring up your saved links in new, unique and useful ways. For example, you could browse through your most recently bookmarked links, your most recently visited links, and so on.

Firefox 3 Themes Get Named

According to Mozilla Links, the new line of Firefox 3 themes all have their own names now:  Tango!, Strata, and Firelight.

Personally, I think I might like the Tango one the best.  The other day played with Strata some but still not a big fan of it.  I am sure it will also be only a matter of time before people release “classic” versions to make the theme look more like Firefox 2.

Firefox 3′s Color Profile Support

When it comes to tweaking some of the internals of Firefox, your average user won’t care that much – but for the graphic or photography nuts this next ‘bit of news should be exciting.  It seems that the color profile support for Firefox 3 will be better.  Although, the updated and upgraded is not enabled by default (due to resource issues) if you need it – it will be there.

This image above should give you a good idea of what you can look forward to once it is enabled.  See how Firefox 3′s color representation and Photoshop are just about the same?  I won’t lie, I am not as up on this color profile information as much as other may be so let me direct you to a great article that tackles this subject even deeper. 

One thing that has always irritated me about looking at pictures on the web is that browsers don’t seem to display photographs properly. And by “photographs” I really mean “colors”. I spend a lot of time tweaking pictures in Photoshop, but when I upload them to my Flickr account and look at them in Firefox 2 the colors aren’t the same — they’re more washed out, dull, and lifeless. It’s a subtle thing, but annoying nonetheless.

Metal Lion Theme Goes to Firefox 3

Still haven’t seen many, but hope to see more. What am I concerned with? Classic Firefox 2 themes that we have all known and loved on Firefox 3. It is not secret that news about themes have dropped some here and elsewhere due to the change from Firefox 2 to Firefox 3 but now it looks like Metal Lion is crossing the line.

Metal Lion – Andromeda gives Firefox 3 a classic sleek look, with your shinny blue icons. If the rest of you desktop is blue, this is the perfect fit for you. Ok, maybe I might be a little short on words for this design but it is a good one so lets let it speak for itself.

The Awesome Bar Excites Me!

I’ve been doing some additional reading this morning about Firefox’s address bar – which seems to be slowly converting over in the minds of the public to being renamed the awesome bar.

One of the features that makes the new address bar system really awesome is that it will match what your typing against the URLs, page titles and tags in your bookmarks and history – in turn giving you what you have been looking for.

The best news is that in Firefox 3 Beta 5, they have cut down a lot in the CPU power that is used when searching via the bar of awesomeness.

If you want more insight into the awesome bar and it’s development, go check out Edward Lee’s web site. Now I haven’t really been a huge bookmarker in the past, but with Firefox’s new address bar and bookmarking system I might have to rethink the way I browse the Web.

Update: If you find yourself not so happy with the new awesome bar here is how you can get rid of it:

The easy way woudl be grab the Old Bar Addon for Firefox 3

The hard way would be to type about:config into the address bar, and type this into the filter box (or scroll down to look for it) browser.urlbar.maxRichResults . Set the value of that to be “0″ and then restart Firefox.

Firefox 3 Faster than Safari Where?

In a funny, yet surprising twist of fate it looks like the ZDNet guys found that using SunSpider JavaScript benchmark tests that Firefox 3 Beta 5 is faster than Safari 3.1… on a Mac!

That has to be a little ‘bit of an embarrassment for the Apple team but good news for all the Apple users out there that are looking forward to trying out and switching to Firefox 3 – once the final version hits the streets.  Sure, the Safari wildebeests will say Firefox is only faster by a 7% margin but it is still a feather to be had in Mozilla’s proverbial cap.
