6 New Firefox 2 Tips

The new Firefox 2 tips are already starting to roll out. I found six of them listed over at ZDNet that I didn’t know about. If I didn’t know about them, you might have not either.

Here are a few simple tips I’ve found helpful to improve the tabbed browsing experience in Firefox 2. These have been tested in the RC2 version on Windows. Ctrl+W closes the tab you are looking at right now.

eWeek Creates Firefox FUD

Yes, it looks like even the folks over at eWeek are trying to spread the fear, uncertainty and doubt about Firefox 2 RC2 with their latest article titled, “Firefox 2.0 RC2 Is a Step… Backwards?“. Now with a title like that, you would expect to hear they took out tabbed browsing, or the new styled RSS feeds. No, they moan about a couple of features I didn’t even know Firefox 2 had – over I never used.

Shame on Jim Rapoza and eWeek.com for trying to get more eyeballs with a Chicken Little headline.

Display Installed Extensions Online

InfoLister is an extension for Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird and Nvu that gathers various information (such as themes, extensions and plugins) about Firefox/Thunderbird and saves it to a file. Now where the interesting part comes in, is the ability to upload that list as an XML file so you can share what extensions you are using with your friends Online.

Thanks goes to Douglas for this very interesting tip. Here is how you can find out a little more about using the output of InfoLister to fit your needs:

FirefoxFacts.com Search Plugin

I had a little free time to spare today, so I thought I would write up a search plugin for FirefoxFacts.com. It is really easy to drag and drop search engine plugins into Firefox, but just in case anybody doesn’t know, I’ll walk through it with you.

1. Unzip the FFSearchPlugin.zip to your desktop

2. Navigate to your “searchplugins” folder (Usually found in Program Files > Mozilla Firefox > searchplugins)

3. Drag and drop firefoxfacts.src and firefoxfacts.gif into the searchplugins folder

4. Restart Firefox, and have fun searching FirefoxFacts.com!

There might not be too much to search through just yet, but in the future this should become a very helpful resource.
