TinyURL Generator

create shorter links, easily!

There are dozens of add-ons for Firefox that will generate any number of tiny URLs from any number of link shortening services.  With that said, I have one more to toss into the category, that may be a little more visually pleasing than some others I have shown you in the past.  The TinyURL Generator is a tiny extension in its own right that allows you to quickly.. well, generate a TinyURL to share.

It creates a TinyURL for the page you are currently viewing in the background.  The URL created is then copied to your clipboard, so that you can paste it anywhere you might need it instantly.  Here are a few more ways you can generate your sharable links:

  • Simply click the icon. A TinyURL is created as defined in the options dialog (default is normal TinyURL)
  • Right-Click the icon. This will give you the choice to create a normal TinyURL or one which is ‘Previewable’. The default type is shown in bold. This can be changed using the Optioins dialog.
  • Right Click any link on a page and select ‘Create TinyURL’ to create a TinyURL for the link destination.

You too can pickup the TinyURL Generator add-on for Firefox on the Firefox Add-ons web site.  For more link shortener extensions be sure to check out our list of the best URL shorteners for Firefox.

Access Every Instant Messanger in Firefox with Meebo

Meebo Firefox Chat ToolIt looks like Meebo’s Firefox extension has gained a lot of popularity and praise since its debut. Mashable is even reporting that “Meebo has already gained 12,000 users in under a week”. If you are familiar with Meebo – the Firefox extension should seem very similar in nature.

Get a sidebar with all of your buddies visible while you’re browsing. Get visual notifications when your friends IM you. Drag and drop links and images from web pages right onto your friends!

Your buddies live in your sidebar and you can login to AIM, Yahoo!, MSN, GTalk, ICQ, and Jabber! The neatest feature I would have to say is the visual notifications letting you know when you get a new message. So does this turn Firefox into an IM client as well as a browser?

New Firefox Cousins – Instantbird and Webrunner

What, you didn’t know that Firefox had more than a few branches off from it’s Mozilla base? To keep things simple, we can think of them as cousins (just hope they don’t start kissing). Both the Webrunner and Instantbird projects show a lot of promise and might just be the next big thing for the Mozilla team.

Webrunner – WebRunner is based on a concept called Site Specific Browsers (SSB). The idea behind Webrunner is to make a super light weight browser that is stripped down of all the toolbars, user interface and more so you have a lighter memory footprint and more a a base around the web application you are pointing it at.

Instantbird – This instant messenger client will be Mozilla’s version of Trillian, Pidgin and others that have come before it. That alone should gain it a lot of traction. The basic backbone of the program is up and ready to download right now – but your not yet getting anything other than the ability to say, “I downloaded Instantbird back when it first came out!”. Bring AIM, Yahoo, MSN and others all together the Mozilla way.

I welcome both into the vaguely-related-to Firefox family. From personal use, Instantbird still has a ways to go but Webrunner is looking interesting right now for simple web applications you can’t do without.

Need a Meebo Firefox Extension

Most Wanted

Here is another request sent my way by MagnoliaSouth. It seems that there is no known or good Firefox extensions for Meebo. For those of you who don’t know, Meebo is one of those super Ajax Web 2.0 solutions. This one allows you to login to various instant messaging services right from the Web all in one spot.

It could work like a small pop up, a toolbar or whatever. As it is, I can open it in another tab, but that’s not ideal. Having it viewable at all times is much better. Naturally the option to hide it should be available as well.

Now the Meebo extension is interesting, there is one that I was able to hunt down – but it isn’t for Firefox 2.

If there is anybody out there that wants to update this extension or write a new one to do the same thing, go for it. Now you could use it if you installed the Nightly Tester Tools extension first.

You can find it here:

Have a better suggest or fix? Leave a comment and let us know about it please!

Have another feature request or suggestion you’d like to see built into Firefox by default or added by an extension? Let me know about it and I’ll feature it on Firefox Facts and maybe even find you a solution to your problem (if you have one).

Update: “Hey there, you might have known about this or someone might have mentioned it already… You can bookmark meebo.com and then edit its properties (right click the bookmark, choose properties). There will be a checkbox for loading it in the sidebar.

From what I can tell, this will accomplish the same thing as that Flock extension. All the same ‘warnings’ apply though – any time you change sidebars, or close the sidebar, you will be signed out of Meebo.”

Thanks to Sean for sending this solution in!
