Watch Out for that Extension!

DartThe folks over at Computer World have put together a list of Firefox extensions that you should avoid. Now I’ll say it from the start, I don’t agree with many of the choices they have on the list. Some like FasterFox (which for me has never improved my speed) I can understand. They don’t want you using Greasemonkey? AdBlock? NoScript? Those I can’t agree with too much.

Instead of calling it a list of extensions to stay away from, maybe they should rename the article “Extensions That Non-Power Users Should Stay Away From”. Then again, if your a power user – what Computer World says probably is not going to change your mind.

Get More Toolbar Space in Firefox

FirefoxI think I have a pretty optimized Firefox setup. Personally I don’t think anybody needs more than two toolbars in Firefox at all times. How can you cut down on the clutter and keep everything accessible with just a few clicks here and there?

1. Shrink Your Main Menu Bar!

Install the Tiny Menu extension to shrink your main menu navigation. This extension replace the standard menu bar with a tiny menu popup.

2. Toss Out the Firefox Throbber!

Ditch the throbber in the upper right hand corner. Each tab has a built in throbber to let you know when a Web page is loading, this main one is not needed anymore. Get rid of it and give yourself some more space.

3. Use Small Icons to Save Space!

Use small icons on your toolbars. To do that, you can right click on the navigation toolbar and click “Customize”. At the bottom of that popup you should see a check mark box for “Use Small Icons”. While you are there you can drag away or add any items you think you might need or never use at all. Personally, I have back, forward, refresh, stop, home, and downloads there.

Any other suggestions for a more organized and clutter free toolbar?

Make Firefox Safe and Secure

Now I do come from the camp of folks that say that Firefox is mainly safe because it is not the tallest nail getting hit at this moment. Internet Explorer is harder hit on by those who wish to do you harm, so that is one reason why it is less safe than Firefox.

On the other hand though, Firefox is a “stupider” browser (no offense to my Mozilla friends) so it is harder for deviants out there to get it to do their evil deeds. No matter if you like Firefox or not, you have to admit there are a lot of great extensions out there that can make your browsing a lot safer. Nothing beats common sense, but having some of these extensions installed should be a good first line of defense.

Firefox 2.0 Compatible Extensions

So, does the Mozilla Firefox extension Web site suck? Well, I guess there is an argument for that. I wouldn’t be so harsh, but it could use some improvements. One big concern folks have is it is pretty hard to hunt down Firefox 2 compatible extensions. When not every extension author has updated – it is disappointing to see an extension you want to use and see it is for an older version only.

Well here is your fix, somebody has made a big list of all the extensions out there today that are compatible with Firefox 2.

Asa Dotzler’s Top 5 Extensions

When Asa makes a list, everybody listens. I have seen this post linked all over the place this morning. Since it does list some quality downloads, I have to point you in his direction as well.

I’ve had this post in draft for about 3 months now and just can’t seem to finish it. I can’t finish it because I honestly haven’t found 10 add-ons that I’ve kept installed for any length of time. Now that Robert’s posted his list, I feel like I should get mine up.
