I can tell you from experience, having too many tabs open can be a real pain.  On occasion though, it is something you have to do, so you might as well find an add-on that will help you navigate through your tabs more effectively.  That is where TooManyTabs comes into play.

This great extension for Firefox can store as many tabs as you like.  How so?  Well, it adds extra tab rows to Firefox.  Rather than wasting your PC’s RAM, you can store your textra tabs in the other rows, remove them from being seen by your PC’s RAM and restore them all qhen you need them again.

This tutorial does a great job at explaining some of the basics of TooManyTabs:

Are you a tab-a-holic?  Then you need to at least give the TooManyTabs add-on for Firefox a shot.  Some of the other features include:

• Color coded tabs, pinned tabs (like perma-tabs), view tab history, restore recently closed tabs
• Customizable & multiple rows for tab storage
• Backup & restore features, tabs can be transferred across machines easily

Chances are this will be fixed sooner, rather than later – here is a little more about the story from The Register:

Security notification firm Secunia reports that the security bug (which it describes as extremely critical) stems from errors in handling JavaScript code. The flaw has been confirmed in the latest 3.5 version of Firefox, released in late June.

Older versions of the popular alternative browser might also be affected, Secunia warns.

Exploit code has been uploaded onto recently revived security exploit website milw0rm, a factor that could hasten the development of more attack code.

Secunia advises Firefox users to avoid browsing untrusted websites or following untrusted links pending the availability of a fix from Mozilla (there’s nothing in the pipeline just yet).

Best advice I can give to you is to browse safely, don’t go to web sites you don’t trust, and be sure to keep your security programs up to date.

Until Mozilla addresses this vulnerability, here’s a temporary fix: Type about:config in Firefox address bar, and set “javascript.options.jit.content” to “false.”

So there is your fix for now.  Thanks to everybody who sent this in!

This problem was fixed in Firefox 3.5.1, so the above hack from Mashable is no longer needed.  To check for updates, be sure to go to Help > “Check for Updates…” in Firefox.

During intensive browsing with approximately 50 tabs, I have found that Firefox 3 generally consumes less than half of the memory used by Firefox 2.0.0.12. Firefox 3 is also snappier and more responsive when switching between tabs and performing other operations that typically lag in Firefox 2.0.0.12 when the browser is experiencing heavy load.

This is great news for any Firefox fans out there. Over the recent years the memory problems seem to be the big sticking point for a lot of people. Has this mountain of an issue finally been solved?

This recent release includes approximately 900 improvements over the previous beta, including fixes for stability, performance, memory usage, platform enhancements and user interface improvements. Awesome news all around.

Here are a few more details worth mentioning:

Star button: quickly add bookmarks from the location bar with a single click; a second click lets you file and tag them.

Places Organizer: view, organize and search through all of your bookmarks, tags, and browsing history with multiple views and smart folders to store your frequent searches.

New Download Manager: the revised download manager makes it much easier to locate downloaded files, and displays where a file came from.

Are we we excited yet? How about the news that 300 individual memory leaks have been plugged, and a new XPCOM cycle collector completely eliminates many more.

Here is the nitty-gritty about:config solution to the problem:

• Open up about:config by typing it into your Firefox address bar.
• Right-click, go to new and then integer and name it this: browser.cache.memory.capacity
• For the integer value, enter in 15000 if you have 512MB to 1GB of RAM. For those with less (between 128MB to 512MB), try a value of 5000.  You’re done!

Then all you should need to restart Firefox for it to take effect.

RAMBack will cause Firefox to issue an internal notification to free up memory that is otherwise held for performance purposes. Additional items will be hooked into this notification in the future.

Another solution to help Firefox from feeling bloated is to check all of your extensions and themes to make sure they are not the culprit for your RAM overages. You might also look into restarting Firefox from time to time.
