Need a good way to quickly reorganize the way content is seen on the web? That is what Pearltrees is trying to do, and it is getting a lot of good press in delivering one of the best representations of this age old idea. The idea of bookmarking pages is really outdated. Shouldn’t there be a better way by now to save, discover and share the stuff you like?

Pearltrees defines itself as a social curation tool. How does it work? Here is what the developers have to say about it:

Pearl the stuff you like on the Web. A pearl is like a bookmark. It holds anything you find interesting on the Web. Click it to open it, drag and drop it to move it… or put your pearl into the trash to delete it.

Organize your pearls by moving them to pearltrees. A pearltree is a curation of web pages. It works like a folder for pearls. Unlike social bookmarking, no need to tag and re-tag. You can open it, close it, browse it, move it into an other pearltree or send it anywhere to share some of your interests.

Discover others’ pearltrees in your areas of interest. First take a look at your connections! If you want to explore more widely you can see the pearltrees most connected to one of your own pearltrees or you can search any topic.

Also this video does a good idea at pitching the basic ideas of pearltrees in a way that we can all understand.

Overall, I am really excited to see what they do with this project and how it moves forward. It might not be the next best thing yet, but it does have a lot of possibilities. You can download Pearltrees for yourself to play with over at the Firefox Add-ons web site.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Today is the day that Firefox’s new add-on site has gone live. You can check it all out at addons.mozilla.org. The new look and feel does look nice, and there is a lot to love here. For example, on the main page you have rotating list of suggestions based on categories like web development, family, social, travel and more. Each category on the left-side menu also has a number count – so you can see exactly how many extensions there are. My favorite new feature might be the listing of recommended, popular, just added and updated extensions all right on the front page. No more hunting around link to link to find them all.

So, what is your general feeling for the new Firefox add-ons site? Love it or hate it? I’ll be sure to be diving into more features from this new site later on – but till then I want to hear what you think about it.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Do you really love the new Firefox favicon that was released a short while ago? Well, thanks to a little shifting around of Firefox’s internal organs Mozilla Links has come up with a way you can update your search box’s Google favicon to match. Here are the instructions:

Locate the searchplugins folder in your Firefox install folder. (typically C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\ on Windows).

Open the google.xml file with a text editor.

Locate a section that starts with <Image width=”16″ height=”16″>. You will see it is followed by a long series of characters (the encoded Google icon).

Replace it with this equally unreadable code: the new encoded Google icon. Ensure the closing </Image> stays there.

Save the file and restart Firefox.

If your picky about this sort of thing, or you just really love the new look this is a quick and easy hack to do. Also check out Mozilla Links for more information on this awesome tip.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

I want to start up something new here. With all the Firefox Facts fans out there and myself, I think we can do some good and help some folks.

Are you looking for Firefox to do something that it has not done before? Are you having trouble finding the perfect extension to fix your issue? Do you have a request for a Firefox feature that has not been seen before? If you fall into any of these camps – drop me an E-mail at mitch@mitchkeeler.com or use our “submit a tip” link and let me know.

If we get enough, I might make the Firefox Most Wanted a regular feature here on the Web site. Get to it, send me your most wanted requests from the folks at Mozilla and I’ll do my best to either let the world know about it or find a solution for your problem.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!
This simple and small extension allows you to select that new searches always appear in a new tab via the browser.

It is a pain in the neck to have to open a new tab before I start a new search (if I do not want to have my current tab changed or surfed away from). I just have to believe though that there must be an easier way to do this. Has anybody else been able to find an about:config hack to get it done?

If not – then at least we have this extension to get the job done.
