Ok, so where is the catch?  This MySpace toolbar is brought to you by the same people who developed Me.dium.  You get to merge two of the Web’s darlings, MySpace and Me.dium… kind of.  The MySpace toolbar comes with Me.dium’s Social Search, which they describe as “the world’s first crowd-powered search engine”. 

It will help you keep your finger on the pulse of the entire internet with search results generated by what the crowds are surfing right now!  Just be careful for those oddball Firefox loving freaks out there on MySpace.  

For most people, I would suggest trying to run Firefox in Safe Mode first.  You can use the command line:  firefox -safe-mode to get there (for Windows users).

On Linux, you can go to your Terminal and run (for Firefox): /path/to/firefox/firefox -safe-mode

On Mac OS X, go to Utilities (in the Applications folder) and open Terminal, then run (for Firefox): /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox -safe-mode

From there you can disable add-ons, reset toolbars and controls, reset bookmarks to Firefox defaults, reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults and restore the default search engines.

What if Safe Mode Does Not Help?

If that does not do the trick for you, you might want to try opening up a clean profile to see if you are still getting the problem.  Check out this previous post to fine out how to launch the profile manager to do so.

Key thing to remember here is if it is a problem with all of your Firefox profiles (your current one or a new one) then you might want to backup and do a clean install of Firefox.  If not, then you might be able to cure you problem by creating a new profile for yourself to use from now on.

First, navigate yourself to your profiles folder and then you want to copy three files, they are named:

• signons.txt
• signons2.txt
• key3.db

Copy and past them into the place you want to back them up to, and you are done.  You can also move these three files to a new Firefox profile (say on a new computer, for example) if you wanted to have the same password information on your laptop.

The CookiePie extension enables you to maintain different cookies storage in different tabs and windows. To give you a better idea of what that would look like in action the creators of the extension have put together a video of CookiePie in action.

All in all, I would say this extension looks very promising for those who need to do multiple logins to the same service with little to no problems at all. I Windows all you need to do is go to Start, Run and then:

Type firefox.exe – P in the Run box of Windows

If you want to gain some control back when it comes to viewing MySpace profiles (and you have Greasemonkey) I would suggest picking up the MySpaceHax user script.

This allows you to have a neat menu on the right over every profile that gives you quick access to: Add, Add to Group, Block, Blog, View Comments, View Pictures and View Groups. This is the Greasemonkey script that every MySpace addict needs to pick up to make MySpace kind of usable.

What you can do is create a separate profile just for work. Here is the list of some advantages:

+ No “play” bookmarks
+ No “play” usernames/passwords (I let Firefox remember mine)
+ Install only those extensions needed for work (Firefox works faster)

This morning, Mark submitted a link that would help you do just that. ForeverGeek.com has a nice tutorial on how to duplicate your existing Firefox profile. This is a nice way to make a backup of your profile as well, just incase things on your PC go bad.
