Firefox 3 – RC1 is in the Public!

Firefox 3 - RC1 is OUT!

After three years of development, Firefox 3 has finally almost made it to a version ready for the public.  So what does the release candidate (otherwise known as RC) mean?  This is pretty much the final version of Firefox 3 – short of bug fixes and little tweaks here and there.

I think this quote from Asa Dotzler sums things up nicely…

With more than 15,000 improvements over the previous release, ranging from dramatic performance and memory gains to truly innovative features like the “Awesome Bar,” Firefox 3 is the no-compromise browser that puts you back in control of your Web experience.

So will you be giving Firefox 3, release candidate 1 a shot?  If interested you can download it for yourself on Mozilla’s web site.

Firefox 3, We Will See You in June!

firefox-release I have never been one for doing a lot of news but I’ll wear the suit and tie any ways while writing this quick post.  According to Wired’s tech blog the final release of Firefox 3 is due in June of this year.  This was disclosed to a roundtable discussion of tech bloggers (I wasn’t invited to!*) on Wednesday.

To give you a timeline to work with, right now we are at Firefox 3, beta 4.  Firefox 3, beta 5 is expected to be released the first week of April (hopefully not on the 1st!). That should though be the last of the beta releases for Firefox 3.

In May we should be seeing the first release candidate hit the streets, and then most of the work will go into kicking extension developers in the pants to try to get them to officially update their code to work with Firefox 3.

* – I am sure my invitation got lost in the mail, right guys? RIGHT?!

Better View of Firefox 2 RC2

Firefox 2 RC2 has only been out a little while, and it seems like the reviews are so far all positive. The only disappointment I have seen across the board is the way it handles RSS feeds, but hey – I am sure they will get better with time. If not, that is the beauty of Firefox, somebody can write an extension to fix it if they don’t like it. With that said, I figured you would all enjoy taking a look at the side by side comparisons arstechnica did of RC1 and RC2 of Firefox 2.

Mozilla Firefox 2 RC1 Released

Well it is finally out, up and running. What is the big deal about release candidate one of Firefox 2? Well, this will be the next nearest thing to the official Firefox 2 browser that we will get. I don’t suspect that many more things will be changed under the hood at this point. There will be some tweaking here and there, but this is pretty much the same browser you will get when Firefox 2 becomes the norm.

Once again, CyberNet News is all over this with multiple download links. He even has a portable version up, so you don’t have to mess with your current Firefox setup on your computer.
