Sage was once one of the more popular RSS feed reading add-ons for Firefox. However, time went by, years went on and these days it is not making much news. However, if you still need a lightweight feed reader, there is now Sage-Too. This is a continuation of the original project to keep it up to date with today’s Firefox browser versions.

Some of the features include:

Reads RSS (2.0, 1.0, 0.9x) and Atom feeds

Feed Discovery

Integrates with Firefox’s bookmark storage and Live Bookmarks

Imports and exports OPML feed lists

Newspaper feed rendering customizable via style sheets

Technorati and RSS search engine integration

It also has support for the following locales: Argentine Spanish, Catalan, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Slovenian, Spanish, and Swedish.

As they say in their own words, “It’s got more of what you need and not much of what you don’t.” You can give it another shot, or take your first trip down lightweight RSS reading road by downloading it on the Firefox Add-ons web site.

Also, don’t forget to start your RSS feed collection with the best Firefox feed out there today, http://feeds.feedburner.com/firefoxfacts. Never leave your RSS feed reader without it!

After reviewing some of the most recent comments on some of the past posts here on Firefox Facts, I saw that somebody had suggested the Brief RSS reader extension. I had never heard of it till reading that post.

Always interested in seeing new readers I gave it a shot and I do have to say it is pretty impressive.

I might even say it is better than Sage.

It is focused on giving you a lightweight RSS reading experience via the Firefox Web browser. I have to say it delivers leaps over bounds.

Here are a few more details about it:

- Integration with Live Bookmarks.
- Articles permanently stored in a database.
- Easily mark articles as read, star the interesting ones.
- Streamlined display of feed content.

If you use Google’s Feed Reader this is a Greasemonkey script that you need. This script adds a feed icon to the upper right corner of your browser window for one-click subscription to Google Reader.

My version of the script adds an overlayed check icon when you’re subscribed to at least one of the feeds that the site advertises via auto-discovery. This was made easy by a URL that Reader exports: http://www.google.com/reader/api/0/subscribed?s=feed/
. It returns “true” or “false” depending on whether the current user (as determined by the Google Account cookie) is subscribed to the given feed.
