This week, Roman writes in and wants to know of a way to do quicker searching via Firefox and not have to start at the beginning of the document to do it.

In IE, because it doesn’t search as you type, you can highlight a piece of text, and then press ctrl-F and have it search below your selection first, then it gets to the bottom of the page and searches the part of the page before your selection. in firefox, i find that the search as you type feature always starts at the top of the page. Is there a workaround?

For the quick searching that you need, I have found that using Firefox’s quick search would be the best way to go. It isn’t the same as the search that you get with Ctrl+F though. For this one all you need to hit is the / key.

This one will give you the search you need to start where you are on the page. Also after you are done with it, it disappears out of sight. Hope that helps!

Have another feature request or suggestion you’d like to see built into Firefox by default or added by an extension? Let me know about it and I’ll feature it on Firefox Facts and maybe even find you a solution to your problem (if you have one).

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Now having the search box up in the right hand corner of your screen is pretty handy. What if you do not want the wasted space though?

I mean, you could conduct all you searching via the address bar and just get rid of the search bar altogether is you wanted to. Now how can you get this done yourself? Well – over at VertebrateSilence.com, Vili has written a guide on help you do just that.

Firefox quick searches (also known as smart keywords) basically allow you to use the address bar of your browser to search the Internet. There are a few quick searches in your browser as a default: typing in dict vanilla should for example give you the definition of vanilla as found in dictionary.com.

+ Add Quicker Searching to Your Firefox Browser!

Need a few more ways to minimize your toolbar space?

Faviconize Your Open Firefox Tabs!

Bookmarking With Favicons on the Bookmarks Bar!

Turn Your Menu Into a One Button Drop Down Box!

The more of these quick minimizing the toolbar space tips that I find, the smaller Firefox seems to become for me. Having a browser that molds itself to your ever desire though is one of the reasons why Firefox is gaining so much popularity.
