Personas, Make Firefox Better… Looking!

Quick Theming with PersonasFirefox Personas is back! I’ve seen a handful of blogs covering this re-launch I guess you could call it all weekend long. It is an awesome project and I am happy to see it is getting a little more time in the sun. Personas are lightweight designs that “skin” the Firefox web browser. Delivered as a web service, the menu interface and the Persona designs are exceptionally dynamic, and should allow for a wide range of interesting possibilities.

Here are a couple of points that make Personas a winner:

  • You can select a Persona from the dynamic menus and see results instantly without having to discover, select, download or install a separate bit of software or code.
  • Personas can be added, removed or updated by their designers at any time, without requiring a software update.

Personas = Future of Firefox?

The bigger idea behind Personas though that I think Mozilla is really looking at is generating a part of the browser from the Web. The Persona selector is dynamically loaded and populated from a JSON feed and all designs are loaded via URLs to remote resources.

I have to think that they would love to be able to deliver more content, tools and services this way. With that said is Personas really a preview of Firefox 4 (maybe Firefox 5) or is it just a neat tool to change your browser look and feel of your browser?

Another point worth bringing up is it does work with a handful of other Firefox themes out there (other than Firefox’s default theme). To get an example of this go download the Cylence Theme : Emerald Variation. If Personas grow in popularity theme designers might want start taking note if their theme works with Personas or not.

Put Firefox in Pinstripe

Remember when I told you last week how to install themes from new sources? Well I have yet another cool looking theme you can practice that on. The Pinstripe 2.2 theme for Firefox by tanjihay over at DeviantArt.com.

Pinstripe Theme for Firefox

Sure it has that “Apple-like” flavor, but even Windows or Linux users can pretend right? Trying my best to forget about the Appleness myself and just keep telling myself it is a cool brushed-metal looking theme. Over and over… till those dreams of Steve Jobs touching my Firefox goes away.

Get Your Purple ToonSkin

ToonSkin for Firefox

Purple, wacky but some-what purdy the ToonSkin theme for Firefox has a little ‘bit of something for everybody to enjoy. Been playing around with this one this morning, and have to say it is pretty nice. It’s a fully functional theme with a purple tint and a nice mix of Windows and Apple design techniques.

The only thing I wish is that it dealt a little better with having the toolbars in different places. If your toolbar area is customized at all – it kind of breaks the theme. Other than that though, I would give it three Firefox fanboys out of five.

Firefox Theme with BIG Buttons

I have never run across a Firefox theme with buttons that were this big till now.

Kempelton Large

The Kempelton Large theme for Firefox delivers in the big button department for sure. You can still get a little ‘bit smaller icons if you go with the ‘Use Small Icons’ option when using this theme. Use the standard Kempelton theme instead if you want a more typical icon size.

Do you like the big buttons?

Amethyst – New Cylence Theme

Purple Cylence ThemeNow it is no secret that I have been a big fan of the “cylence” series of themes for a long time now. I just got word though that a new one has been released. The new Amethyst version of the Cylence line of themes now gives you that traditional look but all flavored with just a touch of purple.

If you want your Firefox surfing to be laced with a touch of class, go give Amethyst a look. I promise it is worth it.

Personas – More Firefox Customization

Firefox PersonaA few weeks back I got an E-mail from a guy who wanted to know if there was an easy way to customize the toolbar background for Firefox. You know, a simple way for people who just want to do a little personalization – not write an entire theme. Well, even though it is in an early beta I have found a project that will do that and a little more. Personas for Firefox is one of the more interesting Firefox projects I have seen for while.

Personas are lightweight designs that “skin” the Firefox web browser. Delivered as a web service, the menu interface and the Persona designs are exceptionally dynamic, and should allow for a wide range of interesting possibilities.

14ZKidz Theme for Firefox

It seems like there are less and less Firefox themes being released these days. Has every good design been done? Well right about when you start to think that another one comes along to take over your browser’s look and feel.

14ZKidz

The oddly named 14ZKidz theme has a colorful (but not kick you in the face with glee) look to it. As you know by now, I like the simple ones – and this one delivers it as good as any of the other boys on the block do.

Classic Compact Look to Firefox

Classic Compact ThemeBigger is not always better.

Sometimes keeping things a little more compact means that you have more room for the more important things.

That is where the Classic Compact Firefox theme is so valuable. It gives you that classic look of the Firefox theme but in miniature form.

A very compact version of Firefox’s default theme, which minimizes vertical space consumed by menu, tool, tab, find and status bars as much as possible without hurting overall appearance.
