Cutting Down the Browsing Clutter

Sure you have heard of trimming the tree around Christmas time, but what about trimming your browser? The folks over at CyberNet have done it again, producing one heck of a nice guide to cutting the slack from your Firefox experience.

Firefox is a truly amazing browser and I think my favorite part about it is that the extensions make it remarkably useful. They add features that I wouldn’t expect a Web browser to do, such as serve as an FTP client. While I think extensions are great, I also find myself installing some that I just don’t need. It is almost like an addiction, and with a new year right around the corner I thought it was a good time to trim some of the “fat” (a.k.a. extensions) off of my Firefox profile by re-evaluating my need for the extensions.

They cover just about everything. From cleaning up your toolbar to clearing the mess from your profile, you have no excuse not to do a little house cleaning before the new year rolls around.

Get More BBC Goodness

I like some of the television the British Broadcasting Company puts out there but I have not really gotten myself in a trend of checking out their Web site that often. When I do remember to do it though, I have seen that the BBC is an interesting source for news and information from the other side of the pond. To help my remember how useful it can be, I downloaded and installed the BBC bar.

Find Toolbar Tweaks

One of my favorite features inside of Firefox is the find toolbar. Just by hitting Ctrl and F at the same time unlocks an ability to find anything one a Web page no matter where it might try to hide. Sure, other browsers have done the find bar before, but none are as good in my opinion.

Swiss Knife Toolbar

Don’t you love how swiss knives seem to have a tool for every occasion? Well the WebSwissKnifeToolBar is a Greasemonkey script that does the same for your browser.

Brought to my attention by its creator, this user script adds a lot of functionality to Firefox. Here are just a few things it can do.

  • Easy an fast search for: Google, YouTube videos, and Wikipedia (Spanish and English)
  • Translator English<->Spanish, with just a click
  • Spanish dictionary (RAE), with just a click
  • Convert a long URL to a tiny URL, with just a click
  • Put and save sticky notes on the Web

Add Your Bookmarks Folder to the Bookmarks Bar

Having a folder filled with bookmarks on the bookmarks toolbar is the only way to go inside of Firefox. I have been using this method of browsing through my favorite Web sites, and not I have found the prefect tutorial to show you how to do it as well.

Quick Preference Button

Do you not wish you had quick and easy access to a few of the preferences inside of Firefox? I know from time to time, I would. The Quick Preference Button extension for Firefox gives you that ability in a small drop down menu from the toolbar.

Googlebar Lite

Everybody loves the Google Toolbar, right? Well not everybody. I will admit I used to use it back when it first came out, but now it just feels a little bloated. I would still like to use some of the Google features, but I don’t want the official toolbar. What am I to do? Googlebar Lite offers you the great taste of the Google toolbar, but is less filling.
