Pirillo Talks Firefox 3

For long time readers, you’ll remember that Chris and Lockergnome were the main supporters of me starting this site and getting the word out about the Firefox Facts e-book. Where here are some of his thoughts on Firefox 3.

Still got much love for Chris, and he’s got some good and bad things to say.

Interesting video – maybe I should do a few video Firefox podcasts?

Released: Firefox 3 Beta 1

This is something everybody and their grandmother will be covering over the next few days, so I thought I should say something about it. Firefox 3 Beta 1 is now ready for testing. Still for “testing purposes only” this version promises to deliver…

  • Improved security features such as: better presentation of website identity and security, malware protection, stricter SSL error pages, anti-virus integration in the download manager, and version checking for insecure plugins.
  • Improved ease of use through: better password management, easier add-on installation, new download manager with resumable downloading, full page zoom, animated tab strip, and better integration with Windows Vista and Mac OS X.
  • Richer personalization through: one-click bookmarking, smart search bookmark folders, direct typing in location bar searches your history and bookmarks for URLs and page titles, ability to register web applications as protocol handlers, and better customization of download actions for file types.
  • Improved platform features such as: new graphics and font rendering architecture, major changes to the HTML rendering engine to provide better CSS, float-, and table layout support, native web page form controls, colour profile management, and offline application support.
  • Performance improvements such as: better data reliability for user profiles, architectural improvements to speed up page rendering, over 300 memory leak fixes, and a new XPCOM cycle collector to reduce entire classes of leaks.

Ad Free RSS Feed for Firefox Facts

I have decided to remove the FeedBurner ads from the Firefox Facts RSS feed. In all honesty it just wasn’t really returning enough of the green stuff to be worth it to me – and if it means I can get a few more subscribers and visitors to FirefoxFacts.com, then ditching them is well worth it.

So might be time to pass this URL to all your friends, amigos and buddies:

http://feeds.feedburner.com/firefoxfacts

Now ad free but still full of goodies!

Spread Firefox – Version 2?

Spread Firefox

Time for one of the best Firefox resources out there to get a re-vamp? Saw a post by Asa this afternoon talking about upcoming changes to SpreadFirefox.com and like any fan boy I couldn’t pass up the chance to spread the word:

As some of you know, there’s been an effort ongoing for a couple of years to come up with a re-design of the Spread Firefox project. There’s a lot of history (too much) to go into all of it, but a while back Ian Hayward posted a call to action for building a new Spread Firefox.

Only big suggestion I can pass would be to draw more attention towards current, future and past Firefox projects such as Firefox Flicks, Mozilla 24, Air Mozilla, and more. Maybe even create a small section for quality un-official resources such as Learn Firefox, Mozilla Links, and hmm.. am I forgetting one?

Browser Comparisons and Firefox Links

Time to dive in and see what the rest of the world is saying about Firefox. Come on, you’ve listened to me and my minions long enough.

Know of a cool link I missed this past week? Leave a comment and share it with the rest of the class.

Firefox Living Up to Updates

Apple didn’t bother with getting things fixed that quickly, so Mozilla has jumped on the ball and updated Firefox to version 2.0.0.7 to fix the recent QuickTime vulnerability. If your Firefox hasn’t updated itself – then it should soon (or you can always go to Help > Check for Updates to get the latest Firefox version).

Need more? Here is a little more information about this issue and fix via Mozilla Developer News:

Due to the security fixes, we strongly recommend that all Firefox users upgrade to this latest release. If you are still running Firefox 1.5.0.x, you are highly encouraged to upgrade to the Firefox 2 series as Mozilla ceased supporting Firefox 1.5.0.x in May 2007. Simply choose “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu to begin the upgrade process.

For more information about the problem, check out this post on CyberNet News about it. Also if you want – you can download and install it via GetFirefox.com.

Want a New FirefoxFacts.com?

I have been reconsidering the idea of changing up the Firefox Facts web site.

If I were to do so – what would you like to see changed, removed, added and updated? I am open to any and all suggestions so feel free to just start one big comment post here and give me all the feedback you have. This web site is for you – so I want to make sure you are getting what you want, what you need and what you love.

Thanks! As always I appreciate each and every one of our readers here and look forward to bringing in some more.

Project Update – Hosting Hoopla

Hosting HooplaNow spending a lot of time talking about things that are not related to Firefox or browsing here just seems like it is a little silly. Just give me five minutes though of your time (or less) and I promise you will feel the effort was worth it.

I just re-launched an older project of mine, HostingHoopla.com. From this point on my hope is this will be “the” list people come to, to find out some of the best news, resources, help, and more on and about the web development and web hosting worlds most of us have to deal with on a daily basis.

Of course you can subscribe via the RSS feed or even get daily e-mail updates. Don’t forget the mobile device friendly version of the Hosting Hoopla link list as well. Many ways to take in the hosting goodness.

So if your a web hosting or web development junkie like me, come check it out and let me know what you think, what you would like to see and more.

Firefox Link and Resource Round Up

Time to take a look at what others are saying and doing with our favorite browser. From fables to cake, you can have it all – but I wouldn’t suggest eating it too. Links don’t taste that great.

Have another one to share? Drop me an e-mail and let me know about it.

Firefox 3 Updates and News

Yes it is the big return of the Firefox Facts Most Wanted list. This time around, I got an e-mail from George who wanted to know:

Hi Mitch really like the firefoxfacts.com website. Do you know where I can get more information about firefox 3? I might want to test it our or want to read some stuff about it.

Well George, I have the perfect link for you. Go check out the official Mozilla Web site for the Firefox 3 project. At the Gran Paradiso Planning Center you can read all about what is in store and the development of Firefox 3.
