Until now, every Firefox add-on that promises to give me awesome abilities to look things up when I highlight a word have been mediocre at best. The Apture Highlights add-on for Firefox really is a game changer. It allows you to highlight a phrase and get background information from Wikipedia, YouTube, Twitter and more – on the same page. It also gives me this ability without looking tacky or sticking out like a sore thumb.

The biggest pain, other than cosmetics, is having to re-teach yourself the way you browse. You have to get used to having that ability at your fingertips to do searches inside a website and get used to the usefulness that an add-on like this brings.

What are some of the newest features?

Customizable keyboard shortcut to call up Apture Search

Performance improvements, contextual search results now even faster

Secure: Automatically disabled on HTTPS (secure) websites to not interfere with your private information

What’s that word? Dictionary definitions now included in search results

and that is only scratching the surface of what the amazing Apture Highlights add-on can do.

You can pick up the Apture Highlights add-on from the Firefox Add-ons website.

When multiple tabs in your browser are not enough, try splitting your browsing area instead. Split Browser, an add-on for Firefox, divides up the context area of the browser in many ways. Want an over the top example?

That might be a little extreme, but it does help to point out that this extension will let you split your browser up however you see fit to do so.

Here are the various ways you can split things up:

Choose the “Split Browser to” menu in the context menu.

Choose the “Load in Split Browser” menu in the context menu on link.

Click popup-button on top/bottom/left/right edges of the content area.

Drop links, bookmarks, tabs, etc. to popup-button on top/bottom/left/right edges of the content area while dragging.

To close split browser frames, hit the close button (for that frame) or “File” > “Close All Split Browser” closes all of them at once. Another neat feature is that the status of the split browsing window saves, so it will automatically restore your splicing of the browser next time you start Firefox.

Split Browser is a terrific add-on if you are looking for a unique way to browse multiple web pages at once.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

How often do you still use bookmarks?

Generally speaking, I find there are two types of browsing people. You have those who still bookmark everything they find interesting, and then those who only bookmark what they need, and Google everything else. A lot of the time, typing something into the search box might be a faster way to launch a web page, rather than searching through a bucket-full of saved links.

Take a stand, and leave you thoughts in the comments. Are you pro-bookmark, anti-bookmark, or somewhere in between the two?

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Ever needed to see your Firefox status bar when browsing in full screen mode (you can get into full screen mode by hitting the F11 key on your keyboard). If you answered, “Yes, tell me more!” do I ever have that add-on of your dreams.

Simply called Full Screen Status Bar, this add-on for Firefox shows the status bar in full screen mode. It is a very simple tweak that should make many full screen web browser users very happy.

Nobody likes having to click on checkboxes, in our e-mail or on the online forms we might need to fill out. It is a pain in the rear process, that I wish sometimes I did not have to do. With that said, I have found one experimental add-on that promises to make the pain go away.

CheckBoxMate, an add-on for Firefox, allows you to check multiple checkboxes with ease by drawing a box around them to automatically select them all. Here is what the developer of the extension had to say about it:

This tool is great for sites that use lots of checkboxes like a registration form or your Hotmail or Yahoo! inbox. Imagine this: Your Hotmail inbox has 10 spam messages and you don’t want to click on 10 separate checkboxes just to select them all. Now you can select them all just by drawing a box around them! To begin drawing a box, your mouse MUST first be positioned over one checkbox. Then drag to activate this tool.

Learn more about the CheckBoxMate add-on on it’s official site, or download it via the Firefox Add-ons web site.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!
