Taking it’s lead from the famous "World of Tomorrow" events you used to see boasted about at the old World’s Fairs – this new website from Mozilla acts as a showcase of demos for what Firefox 4 can do.

In addition to the interactive demos the website delivers to you, you can also learn more about how each demo works and what technology is used to make it happen. The man navigation of the website divides the demos between HTML5, Design, Video and WEBGL. Hopefully more demos will be added soon!

As a bonus, if you want to see more great demonstrations of what HTML, CSS and JavaScript can do – head on over to the Mozilla Demo Studio.

If you are using the new Firefox 4 release candidate, then this is a website you should definitely check out. Take a trip to Mozilla’s Web O’ Wonder and let me know what your favorite demo was.

So what are their names? Here is a little more information about that from Mozilla’s blog:

You can also help us name the cubs! Right now they go by the rather utilitarian names “cub #1″ and “cub #2″, but you can add your suggestions for what they should be called on the site. And, that’s just the beginning – over the next few months we’ll be providing more ways for you to interact with them, support firefoxes in the wild and increase awareness of Mozilla’s mission.

With up to six different camera angles to check out – there is a lot to love about these two cute and furry creatures. The Red Panda (aka the Firefox) is an endangered animal, so anything that Mozilla can do to raise awareness about this is a good thing. You can also follow their caretaker on Twitter @cubcaretaker.
Some websites, like Hulu for example, give you the ability to dim everything in the background on a page so that you can focus on the video you are watching. What if you could do that on every website? That is what the add-on for Firefox, Turn Off the Lights, brings to the browser.

This brings distraction free video watching to Firefox, plain and simple. Here are a few more features of Turn Off the Lights:

Turn the lights back on, by clicking on it

Fade in and out effect just like the Chrome, Safari and Opera extension

Support multiple video sites: YouTube, HTML5 video

Support multiple image sites: Google Images Search

More features are planned for the future too. They are looking to add autoplay, color changing, context menu options and more. You can learn more about the Turn Off the Lights project from their Google Code project website and pick up the add-on for Firefox from the Firefox Add-ons website.

This early version of the add-on only exports into two open formats, Theora for video and Vorbis for audio, but for web developers and application builders, this exciting ‘bit of news means you may soon be able to to even more with the web browser of tomorrow.

It is not yet ready for prime time. Here are a few more important notes from the developers:

This pre-alpha version of the add-on only works with the Firefox nightly builds on a Mac. We’re working hard to extend support to Windows, Linux and 64 bit platforms as soon as possible (there are currently no plans to support earlier versions of Firefox). We recommend going through the README, which lists known issues.

They do plan to allow live streaming of video feeds, build in support for Windows and Linux, plus a few more tweaks for performance and reliability too. Head over to the Mozilla Labs if you want to try it out, or learn more about the Rainbow project.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Want to be able to download some of the best HD 1080p videos from across the internet, but missing that Firefox add-on that promises to get it all done in a simple way? KeepTube is the video downloading extension you might want to take a look at.

According to the author of the KeepTube add-on you can:

Download Youtube Videos (HD 1080p & 720p/HQ MP4, FLV, 3GP) Dailymotion (HQ MP4, FLV), Megavideo (HD/HQ FLV) Google (HQ MP4, FLV), Vimeo (HQ MP4) Break (HQ MP4, FLV), Veoh (HQ MP4, FLV), Metacafe, Spike, Myspace, Facebook, Current, and more!

They even supply a neat chart covering all the video downloading basics they provide, that others don’t.

Color me impressed. The positive thing about the KeepTube add-on is it supports a lot of websites. Bad news is, it still will not support every single website you might watch videos on. However, that is an eventual flaw all these video download add-ons have.

On the negative side, I really don’t like how this add-on puts itself all over the browser. Give me one simple button or addition to the webpages I visit. It seems like it is invading my space, just a little ‘bit.

Overall, if you don’t have a video downloading add-on you are in love with yet – give KeepTube a shot. It gets the job done, supports tons of websites out there and you can download it for free on the official Firefox Add-ons website.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Think that Firefox’s internal download manager might need a few more bells and whistles? Then you really need to check out FlashGot. This Firefox extension will let you download all the links, movies and audio clips on a web page with just one simple click of the mouse.

It is known as one of the most popular, lightweight and reliable external download managers out there. The real benefit with the FlashGot add-on is being able to download multiple files from multiple links at the same time, all at once.

Here are some of the other features worth diving into:

FlashGot Link – downloads through the default download manager the link under the mouse pointer.

FlashGot Selection – catches links in highlighted text/images, attempting also pure text to anchors conversion, performing some “smart” replacement like turning “hxxp://” into “http://”.

FlashGot All – grabs all the links found in the current page and dispatches them to the default download manager.

FlashGot Tabs – performs a “FlashGot All” on every tab open in the current window.

FlashGot Media – it’s enabled only when a streaming video or audio clip is playing in the current browser tab: this command intercepts downloadable addresses of the content pieces played so far in the page and sends them to the download manager.

Here you have five different ways to download files, that you do not have without the add-on in question. You can download the FlashGot add-on from the Firefox Add-ons web site, and learn more about it on it’s official web site – flashgot.net.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Now, I know what you are going to tell me before you even say it.

“Mitch, there are already a million and one video downloaders out there, why review another one?”

Number one, you are right – there are way too many. So what makes the 1-Click YouTube Video Download any different? It cuts out the useless junk, and gets right to the meat and potatoes.

Other plugins make you pass through one place, that goes to another, and then finally after you turn in a circle three times you might have the video. This add-on doesn’t make you do that dance. Instead, it adds download links under the videos on YouTube.

All you do is select if you want to download the .flv version, the .mp4 version, or the HD version (if available). Click the link, the download starts and you are done.

You can pick up the 1-Click YouTube Video Download add-on for Firefox on the Firefox Add-ons web site.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Since Facebook is the king of the hill when it comes to social networks, there have been a lot of add-ons dedicated to making it better. Facebook is great, but is not without flaws. Thankfully, these Firefox add-on developers have worked out some of the kinks and have masterminded some of the best add-ons for Firefox to date.

Here are my top five Facebook add-ons you can add to Firefox.

Friendbar

Facebook and Twitter are now easier than ever to use. Friendbar displays a running stream of text and photo updates right on the toolbar, and allows you to post updates, to like, comment, update, retweet, dm, and reply from the toolbar itself.

Facebook Toolbar

Facebook seems to quickly be outgrowing the other social networks by leaps and bounds. It is hard to find a friend that hasn’t switched over to it from the other social networks like MySpace and the like. So with that said, why not grab a toolbar that will help you get a little more out of your Facebook usage and help you stay connected with your friends even better?

Facebook Photo Album Downloader

In need of a way to download all the images you may have uploaded to your Facebook photo album? Sure you could go through each image, click by click and download each one individually. Why do that though, when you have FacePAD. This extension will let you grab all the photos from any album you need on Facebook.

Facebook Video

The popular Greasemonkey Facebook video script is now a full-fledged Firefox addon that lets users download or convert Facebook videos, and embed videos outside of Facebook.

Facebook Dislike

You can “like” things on Facebook, so why can you not “dislike” things too? If you use Facebook, and you have Firefox – you can now add the feature some have really been wanting. You get the ability to dislike things that your friends have posted.

There are my top five, which one is your favorite? I would have to say that the Facebook Photo Album Downloader is probably the most functional, so in turn – my favorite of the favorites. What also would be the Facebook flaw you wish you could fix? You might just be the inspiration for some Firefox add-on developer’s next creation.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!

Happy birthday wishes and big congratulations go out today to Firefox. Did you realize that Firefox is five years old? Some people are having a hard time thinking five years passed by so quickly, while others feel like it has been around even longer than that.

Here’s a great video that does a good job at telling the story of Firefox, from then to now:

The peeps over at Lifehacker have also written up a great retrospective that is well worth checking out. What birthday wishes would you like to send to the Mozilla team? Without Firefox, there would be no Firefox Facts – so as I enjoy three years of this blog, I’d like to thank Mozilla for the inspiration and all of you for reading it every day and making it one of the most popular un-official Firefox blogs out there today.

So happy birthday to Firefox, one of the best browsers out there on the planet.

Facebook Fan Page Come join the fun on the Firefox Facts Facebook Fan Page!
